Women-directed films highlight sequence
Women in film. Primarily actors, some are
screenwriters or editors, but seldom are they
directors.
Despite the fact that the women’s movement
has been growing by leaps and bounds here in
the United States, a raised consciousness has
yet to arrive in movie studios or the Directors
Guild. Yet, in supposedly less ' liberated’’
Europe, women are regularly directing films
within the traditional production system.
Liliana Cavani (The Night Porter), one of the
most successful directors in Italy, suggested that
"maybe it’s because for all that surface talk in
America, men there don’t really like or trust
women, while here in Europe, there is probably
far less of that ‘raised consciousness’ and things
are far from perfect, but the men both like and
trust women." Whether Cavani’s speculation is
on the right track or not, the university
community will have a chance to see five
contemporary films directed by women, courtesy
of the EMU Cultural Forum.
Starting the series on Sunday, Feb. 1 is
Lumiere. Directed by the noted French actress
Jeanne Moreau, Lumiere explores a woman’s
visions of herself, of other women, and their
relationship to the world.
The second film of the series is also directed
by an actress — Gunnel Lindblom, a protege of
Ingmar Bergman. Lindblom's film, Summer
Paradise, is a passionate portrait of four
generations of one family who gather for a
summer at their seaside retreat. Summer
Paradise comes to the university Sunday, Feb. 8.
From Hungary comes the third film, Women,
directed by Marta Meszaros, one of the most
successful filmmakers working in Hungary today.
Like Lumiere, Women explores woman-woman
friendships. Women can be seen Sunday, Feb.
15.
On Friday, Feb. 20, Peppermint Soda comes to
the university screen. Another French film,
Peppermint Soda is the directorial debut of
Diane Kurys. The film chronicles a young girl’s
coming of age in 1963, a tumultuous year in
French society.
Ending the series on Sunday, Feb. 22 is the
surprise hit of last year, the Australian My
Brilliant Career. Gilliam Armstrong's first feature
takes place during the late 1900s and is the story
of a plucky young woman determined to be a
writer, and not a wife.
