    Weekend athletes play
ball for fun, competition
Weekend athletes can test their
athletic prowess against the likes of
Julie Cushing and other current and
former University basketball players by
claiming a spot on a Eugene city-league
basketball team.
"Wherever they’ll let us play," the
city-league teams take to the court, says
Mary Kay Hessel, Eugene Parks and
Recreation Department (EPRD)
athletics supervisor. League games are
played at various schools.
And it’s not too late to join this year’s
winter league, which began in
December and continues through
March 1.
The 96 Eugene city-league basketball
teams have until Jan. 23 to add new
players to their 16-player rosters.
Although Hessel says she isn’t sure
which teams, if any, have room for
additional players, she says most teams
don't have a consistent number of team
members at games.
New players submit an add-form to
the EPRD office for approval. Phone-in
additions are not acceptable. Players
who live outside Eugene must pay a $5
registration fee.
City league basketball teams, whether
AAU men's-league or "Over 30"
league, provide a level of competition
suitable for the weekend athlete or the
former college ballplayer.
Any high school graduate can join a
city-league team, while high school
students can compete on a church team
with Hessel’s approval.
The teams are classified into leagues
based on skill levels. The competition
ranges from the top-flight men’s AAU
teams, which include many ex-college
players, to the ‘over 30" leagues.
Two women's leagues field eight
teams, which include several current
and ex-University players.
The entrance fee for men’s AAU and
A teams is $181, and $161 for all other
leagues. The fees pay for officials, score
and time keepers, trophies, printing and
postage.
This year there are six teams in every
league, each playing a ten-game double
round-robin.
This year’s leagues include the men's
AAU, men's and women’s A and B,
men's B major and intermediate, men’s
C, men’s leftover, and men’s over 30.
In women's A-league play, the
Flakensteins, managed by former
Oregon basketball player Chrisanne
Briot, have won their first two games by
margins of about 30 points.
The Flakensteins team also includes
former Oregon women basketball
players Cushing, Rachel Thompson and
Tara Smith.
