Matmen meet Vikings
for third time this year
Portland State University will take it's
third shot this season at the Oregon
wrestling team today at 7:30 p.m. in
McArthur Court.
The Vikings have been unsuccessful
in their first two attempts. Oregon won
an early season dual, 30-24, and blitzed
the Vikings 29-7 in the Oregon Invita
tional.
The Ducks, ranked eighth in the na
tion, will be seeking its 13th dual meet
win against one loss. Portland State's
record is 12-7-1.
Portland State is led by Charlie Lucas
at 142 pounds and Kevin Benson at
167.
“Charlie is a great wrestler,” says
Oregon coach Ron Finley “He beat
Scott Bliss (second in the NCAA meet)
last year and beat (Oregon State All
American) Mike Bauer earlier this sea
son.
“He will likely wrestle Bill Nugent,
which should be a great match.”
Lucas is 17-3 and Nugent 10-2.
At 167, Jett Stuebing, 15-1 this sea
son, will take on Benson, 11-1. Ben
son’s only loss was to Stuebing.

Management
also to blame
for violence
Any federal law to control
violence in sports should be
aimed equally at players,
coaches and management, said
National Football League veter
an Alan Page.
In an article published Mon
day in the February issue of
Sport magazine, Page, a defen
sive tackle with the Chicago
Bears and practicing attorney,
said legislation is needed
because those in charge of the
nation's professional sports
have failed to do the job.
Page said the proposed
Sports Violence Act is a “posi
tive step," but that "The act
does not go far enough because
it neglects to place criminal
penalties on those people who
promote and-or teach players to
use excessive violence.”
The proposed law, expected
to be introduced to Congress
this year, contains maximum
penalties of a year in prison and
a $5,000 fine.
Page pointed to two recent
cases where legal hits severly
injured players. In one,
Philadelphia wide receiver Wal
ly Henry suffered broken ribs
and a ruptured spleen. In the
other, New England wide
receiver Darryl Stingley was
paralyzed from the neck down.
