Ducks put league record
on line against Vikings
After two undefeated seasons
in league basketball action, the
women’s basketball team is
hoping for an unprecedented
third perfect season.
Every other team in the
Northwest Women's Basketball
League will be looking to upset
Oregon’s domination.
Tonight, Portland State
University will take its shot at the
Ducks with a 7:30 p.m. game in
Portland.
“This game (PSU) is not one
we can look over,’’ says Oregon
coach Elwin Heiny. “We learned
that against Arizona State. We
have to be ready."
By all accounts, Oregon,
which has an 11-5 season
record and is 1-0 in league ac
tion, is ready, Heiny says. “On
paper we should be the better
team. We'll just have to play like
that."

work hard.”
Statistically, Oregon has the
edge on the Vikings, but PSU
holds a one-game edge in the
series between the two teams.
Bev Smith, a 6-0 forward,
leads Oregon in scoring (18.4)
and rebounding (11.7). Alison
Lang, Oregons’s 6-3 center, has
averaged 13.4 points and 6.5
rebounds and Angie Snider, a
5-10 guard, 11.9 points and 4.3
rebounds.
Portland State’s scoring
game also depends on a for
ward, 6-0 Linda McLellan, who
averages 15.4 points and 10.9
rebounds. ' McLellan is their
leading player," Heiny says.
“But they have a mix of a lot of
players.”
But while the Ducks are
picked as favorites in tonight's
contest, Heiny says the game
“could be more than a hinder
ance than a help" since Oregon
plays top league foe OSU two
nights later.
“OSU obviously has the best
team they’ve ever had,” Heiny
says. “But then again, so do
we.”
Walker wins

University Scholastic Review
Board and will play against
Oregon State on Saturday
night.

off the team last Thursday.
Walker missed two games.

after dropping to eight. Ray
Whiting, who had planned to
redshirt for personal reasons,
returned to the team Monday
night against California
One more player, Gary
Gatewood, is out with a broken
wrist but could return by early
February. Jerome Williams will
miss the season with a broken
shoulder.
