This widely praised film was first in the
U S. in early 1979 and astonished many
for two reasons: a great story coupled
with great filmmaking, and it's a Russian
production. The last is astonishing
because recent Russian films have not
achieved the greatness of Russian cin
ema in the '20s. The setting of the film is
1918 during the the Bolshevik Revolu
tion. In the south of Russia a film crew is
attempting to finish a romantic melo
drama, oblivious to the tide of change
about to engulf them Their film supply
runs out, government troops invade their
set and the turmoil of revolution draws
closer. Only the beautiful leading lady is
able to recognize the political realities, as
falling in love with a Bolshevik camer
aman she finds herself caught up in the
forces of revolution and transformation

and teaches in San Francisco, working
