New special program
assists handicapped
A new program to help
teachers of the severely han
dicapped update their skills or
prepare for a supervisory posi
tion is now available at the
University College of Education.
The program, a standard en
dorsement for teaching the
severely handicapped, focuses
on skills for independent living.
Teachers are prepared to teach
handicapped people skills,
which range from feeding
themselves to using public
transportation.
In addition, students learn
curriculum design and tech
niques to integrate severely
handicapped persons into their
community.
“What we were teaching five
years ago may not apply any
more because the field of
special education is evolving so
rapidly. In fact, materials for
teaching the severely
handicapped often do not ex
ist,” says Barbara Wilcox, as
sistant professor in the Division
of Special Education and
Rehabilitation.
The new standard endorse
ment program, authorized by
the Oregon Teacher Standards
and Practices Commission this
fall, is the second step for
teachers of the severely han
dicapped.
