Expands downstairs area Bookstore stretches out Ever-increasing business in the University Bookstore has prompted the store’s most ex tensive remodeling in 15 years. The bookstore now does $5 million worth of business yearly, says general manager Jim Wil liams. The best way to meet this in creasing demand was to ex pand some sections of the store and remodel others, Williams says. The greatest change took place in the art and architecture department. The expanded department was moved from the rear of the main floor to the basement. Not only does this shift give the art and architecture section more room, it allows for a wider range of products and better specialized service, Williams says. Relocating the section trig gered changes in other areas that made “more modern mer chandising techniques’’ possi ble in the store. The school and office sup plies department and the elec tronics section have been moved to the rear of the store, creating more room on the main floor for elaborate displays like those in larger department stores, he says. The changes on the main floor have opened up space for both the sporting goods section and the T-shirt section. But, more importantly, all the aisles on the main floor have been widened, Williams says. The beginning of each new term can be a hectic and crowded time in the store's book department upstairs. But Williams says changes have been made upstairs that should help. Employees of the general book section have been moved from the middle of the floor to the front to allow for more ef ficient service, Williams says. Text book section employees have taken over the area vacat ed by the general book staff, and the text book section has been expanded — in both space and sales area. Aisles upstairs have been widened, too. “Throughout the store there is hardly an area that hasn't been touched,” Williams says. The remodeling costs were minimal. Moving the art and ar chitecture department to the basement was a simple procedure, and the entire remodeling venture cost $60,000, Williams says. The money came from cash re serves that had been set aside for remodeling. ■Uua / LIVE MUSIC! Acoustic Guitar by Lora & Rob .
