Schroeder still eludes police
Eugene police have called off
a search of the Skinner Butte
area for convicted sodomist
John Paul Schroeder, but on
Monday police and county
sheriff's detectives still were
checking leads concerning the
escaped felon.

Schroeder, recently convict
ed on charges of sodomy,
burglary and attempted rape,
escaped Friday night from the
Lane County Jail in Eugene. He
also is a suspect in dozens of
sexual assualts on women in the
west University area.
Marcia Morgan, Lane County
Sheriff's crime prevention
specialist, says both Eugene
police and the Sheriff’s depart
ment are asking the public to
report any persons that may fit
Schroeder’s description.
Schroeder is described as
being a 30-year-old white male,
6 feet 3 inches tall, 180 pounds
with blue eyes and long brown
hair often worn in a pony tail. He
last was seen wearing green jail
clothes with the initials LCAC
stenciled on the shirt's back.
Schroeder apparently used a
wrench to break a small four-ply
laminated security glass win
dow in his jail cell and climbed
to the ground with a rope made
of bed sheets.
Morgan says the sheriff's
department is looking at securi
ty problems in the jail as a result
of Schroeder’s escape.
Officers with the Eugene
Police Community Officers Pa
trol Team say the department is
mostly back to normal after
searches of the Skinner Butte
area were called off Monday.
Officers say anyone con
cerned about home security
since Schroeder’s escape can
arrange for a free security
check by the Eugene COP
Team, 687-2677.
