LTD board approves 60-cent bus fare

After two hours of debate
Tuesday night, the Lane Transit
District board of directors ap
proved a base fare increase
from 35 to 60 cents.
Also approved in the 4-2 vote
was an additional 35-cent zone
fare for Zone 2 and a 85-cent
zone fare for Zone 3. The mo
tion includes a stipulation to
evaluate the 60-cent base fare
Oct. 1 to decide whether an
increase to 65 cents is neces
sary.
Board members bantered
over an increase to 55, 60 or 65
cents. The original plan,
proposed April 22, called for a
65-cent base fare.
Board president Ken Kohnen
and board member Pat Randall
opposed the vote. Both said a
55-cent fare was enough.
"If we go too high (with the
fare),” said Kohnen, “we will
lose riders. There’s a barrier. I
talked to some drivers, and they
tell me that at 65 cents, there will
be a substantial drop in rider
ship.”

vote. The board should con
sider the suburban riders above
all else, Randall said. “Urban
riders can find alternate meth
ods of transportation — they can
take a cab, ride a bike, walk.
Suburban riders don't have that
choice. We must protect our
suburban riders.”

Rogers "don’t agree too often,”
Rogers composed a letter for
Randall opposing an increase in
the fare “in one chunk.” He said
he prefers increases by small
increments.
Another portion of the original
proposal, the use of a day pass
to replace the transfer pass was
struck from the proposal by a
unanimous vote. Board
members said the $1 day pass
would be unfairly expensive for
riders who only make one-way
trips.
The board passed the 60-cent
fare at 10:30 p.m. After a five
minute recess, board member
Dan Herbert moved to recon
sider the vote. His proposal was
defeated 3-3.
Board member Ted Langton
said the long debate was un
necessary and unproductive. "It
gets a little tiring.”
Several people from Coburg,'
most of them senior citizens,
were on hand to express their
displeasure of the proposed
65-cent fare.
One woman said most seniors
live on only $240 to $300 a
month. "People living on that
kind of money just can’t afford
(a 65-cent fare).”
“I am concerned not only for
myself,” said Coburg resident
Mary Johnson, “but for the
other seniors who may not be
able to afford it.”
The audience reacted with
applause when the 60-cent
proposal was approved.
In other business, the board
approved the first reading of
Ordinance 20, which would in
crease the payroll tax from LTD
on district businesses from .5 to
.6 percent. The board must ap
prove a second reading at the
next meeting before taking ac
tion on it.

transportation manager for the
Olympic trials committee, also
asked the board to ponder a
proposal to assist a shuttle sys
tem from Autzen Stadium to
Hayward Field during the trials.
