Boyd halts trials’ role in film
Plans to film parts of a movie
during the Olympic Trials were
cancelled by University Pres.
William Boyd Wednesday.
Boyd said he has decided
not to permit the filming of
"Personal Best,’’ a movie
about women athletes,
because of the responsibility
the University has to the ath
letes and fans attending the
trials.
Boyd made his decision
after meeting with Robert
Towne, the author of the
movie script, and members of
the University community.
“The University is jealous of
its reputation for holding track
and field trials which are highly
satisfactory to athletes and
fans," Boyd said. “We do not
wish to jeoprodize that repu
tation — not even in the couse
of a promising film.
“Following my conversation
with Mr. Towne, i am persuad
ed that he is sympathetic to the
concerns which have been
raised and will deal with them
in a sensitive manner," Boyd
added. ‘‘I don’t give my
opinion as a film critic any
weight, but I feel Personal
Best' may well prove to be an
excellent movie.
"In spite of confidence in
the honorable intentions of the
filmakers, we do not want to
run the risk of intruding on the
trials.”
