    Low funds
still plague
drug center
By MIKE RUST
Of the Emerald
The Drug Information Center raised
almost $2,000 in a jog-a-thon last
month, but the center's financial
problems are far from solved.
Although no specific figures are
available, program manager Joe Coss
says the center needs to raise more
money by the first of next year to keep
staff positions from being eliminated
"We've never been able to generate
enough funds to cover all of the posi
tions,'’ Coss says
But Coss says contracts are being
negotiated with state agencies, such as
the State Mental Health Division, and
wtth other Oregon counties. The DIC is
already providing services to other
counties because of its policy of not
turning anyone away
"The center could serve three or four
counties on a regular budget of
$70,000," Coss says ‘‘Another $20,000
to 25,000 and we would be able to serve
the state.”
The DIC provides many services for
both the University and the community
as a whole, including telephone and
walk-in facilities; drug identification
and educational services; and a library
and publications
The University currently allocates the
oenter $20,000 annually, along with a
house and bookkeeping services.
Another $30,000 comes from both state
and Lane County grants, while around
$20,000 annually comes from grants
from the ASUO and school district 4-J,
as well as from service fees and fund
raising activities
Last month s jog-a-thon was held at
Hayward Field, where participants ran
for an hour.
"More than 50 people showed up and
they ran their hearts out,” DIC Director
Mark Miller says "Some people ran
more than 40 laps in one hour and
that’s just amazing. "
Additional fund-raising events will
’definitely” take place in the future,
Mller says
