College grid bowls bite the bullet
(AP) — It is doubtful if the
major college football bowls
ever have experienced a worse
weekend than the last one.
With the Southeastern Con
ference champion committed to
the Sugar Bowl, the Southwest
king to the Cotton Bowl and the
Big Eight titlist Orange Bowl
bound, the various selection
committees usually must look to
the independent teams for one
of those all-too-rare national
championship dream pairings.
Unfortunately, the nation’s
three top independents — Notre
Dame, Penn State and Pitts
burgh — were the only members
of The Associated Press Top 20
to lose Saturday, forcing the
bowl committees to bite the
bullet for now.
The Rose Bowl, of course,
matches the Big Ten and
Pacific-10 champs and couldn’t
care less about the indepen
dents. And Southern California
of the Pac-10, the nation's
No. 1-ranked team, continued its
winning ways with a 48-14 rout
over Minnesota.
Runner-up Alabama flattened
Baylor 45-0 and third-ranked
Oklahoma trounced Tulsa
49-13, but it wasn’t that easy for
some other Top 20 teams.
For example, fourth-ranked
Texas, behind 9-3 at halftime,
had to rally to win its opener
17-9 over Iowa State. Purdue,
ranked 17th, posted a 28-22
triumph over No.5 Notre Dame,
and Texas A&M stunned No.6
Penn State while Nebraska and
Michigan State, the 7-8 teams,
came from behind to salvage
24-21 victories over Iowa and
Miami of Ohio, respectively.
Ninth-ranked Missouri
swamped Mississippi 33-7 — the
Tigers trailed 7-3 at the half —
while No. 10 Houston was idle.
Pitt was the only Second 10
loser, bowing to North Carolina
17-7. Meanwhile, No.11 Mi
chigan beat Kansas 28-7, No. 12
Washington shaded Oregon
21-17, No.14 Florida State
whipped Miami, Fla. 40-23,
No.15 Arkansas topped
Oklahoma State 27-7, No.16
Ohio State outscored Washing
ton State 45-29, No. 18 Southern
Methodist defeated North Texas
State 20-9, No.19 North Ca
rolina State trimmed West Vir
ginia 38-14 and No 20 UCLA
trounced Wisconsin 37-12.
All-American Charles White,
who missed most of Southern
Cal’s opener and all of last
week’s game with a bruised
shoulder, sat out most of the
Trojans’ rout of Minnesota —
but only because he rushed for
153 yards on only 10 carries,
including touchdowns of 68 and
10 yards, as his team piled up a
35-0 halftime bulge.
"USC is one hell of a football
team,” said Minnesota Coach
Joe Salem. "Bo Schembechler
(Michigan’s coach) has said
USC has more talent than any
other college football team ever
to play the game, and I certainly
wouldn’t disagree.”
NAVY OFFICER.
YOU GET RESPONSIBILITY THE MOMENT
YOU GET THE STRIPES.
A lot of big corporations offer you a big
title. But how many offer a young college
graduate a really important job?
As a Navy Officer, you don’t have
to wait to do a job that counts. We give
you one as soon as you’ve earned your
commission. A job with responsibility for
the lives of others, and for millions of dollars
of complex equipment. A job that requires
skill and leadership. A job that Navy Officers
have been doing proudly for 200 years.
If that’s the kind of job you’re looking
for, speak to a Navy recruiter. You’ll find
that Navy Officers have unequalled
opportunities in fields like Nuclear Power,
Aviation, and Engineering.
Or call toll free 800-841-8000. (In Georgia,
toll free 800-342-5855.) Early responsibility.
It’s what being a Navy Officer is all about.

Orioles win
AL East
BALTIMORE (AP) - When
they clinched the American
League East championship
Sep. 23, it was a new experience
for most of the Baltimore Orioles
and they directed their rowdy
celebration at the man who
rebuilt the team after substantial
re-entry draft losses.
General Manager Hank
Peters was late arriving for the
Saturday night party, but once
spotted by the players, he was
doused with bottles of imported
French champagne and beer.
Then, as if that wasn't quite
enough, the Orioles showed
Peters their gratitude by allow
ing him to remove his shoes
before he was tossed in the
whirlpool.
Only three players — pitcher
Jim Palmer, center fielder Al
Bumbry and shortstop Mark
Belanger — were around in 1974
and remember the last time the
Orioles won a division title.
The youngsters were easily
identified by their adeptness at
opening champagne bottles It
took Eddie Murray about five
minutes just to pop the cork on
his bottle, while Terry Crowley,
who has been on five cham
pionship teams, already had
been squirting his bottle.
The raucous behavior erupt
ed six hours after the team had
learned they were the title vic
tors.
It was just moments before
the Orioles were scheduled to
play a doubleheader against
Cleveland when they heard Mil
waukee had suffered a 6-3 loss
to Minnesota. That gave
Baltimore the championship,
but denied the team the right to
clinch the title on its home field.
The Orioles have never clinched
in Baltimore.
Manager Earl Weaver, sop
ping wet from the 10 bottles of
champagne that had been
poured over his head, said: "I’m
really proud of our guys. It was a
bad night with a terrible field,
but they all went out and played
the game like any other and
tried to win. They were not try
ing to rush things and get it
over.
"It’s a tremendous relief to
get it over with,” said Weaver.
Blazers win
over Spurs
EL PASO, Texas (AP) - For
ward Abdul Jeelani, starting his
first season with Portland, led
his teammates with 23 points
Sep. 23 to give the Trail Blazers
a 107-104 National Basketball
Association exhibition win over
the San Antonio Spurs.
Jeelani, who played in Italy
the past two years, scored 14 in
the first half.
San Antonio trailed Portland
until the last minute of the third
quarter when guard Mike Evans
stole the ball and fed Mike Gale
who tied the score, 83-83.
Portland's Larry Steele sealed
the game by making a penalty
shot in the final seconds.
