Survey rates art ed high
The University's art education doctoral program ranked
second in the quality of its faculty among 18 similar programs in a
recent nationwide survey.
Conducted by the art education department at the University of
Illinois, the survey asked faculty at The University of Oregon and at
other universities to give professional opinions about the effective
ness of doctoral programs in art education.
Gordon Kensler is acting head of the doctoral program, a part
of the University's curriculum and instruction department within the
College of Education.

Fireworks and music slated for Fourth
Live music and fireworks will
be blasting from Autzen
Stadium into the sky for the 29th
annual 4th of July fireworks dis
play sponsored by the Active
20-30 Club.
The stadium gates will open at
6:30 p m. and the entertainment
will start at 7:00 p.m. with music
provided by Happy Days. The
band will be playing tunes from
the 1950's until 8:45 p m. The
fireworks will begin around
dusk, which was 9:15 p.m at
last year's display, according to
Active 20-30 Club chairer

People watching the
fireworks should consider the
benefit of seating within the
stadium rather than outside
areas for two reasons: Stadium
spectators can be closer to the
live music and some special
fireworks are planned, which
can only be seen inside the
stadium.
“If you keep the fireworks as
short as possible," says Brist.
“You can keep people's inter
est “ He adds that last year's
display lasted around one and a
half hours.
Many volunteers needed
The Eugene Voluntary Action Center is looking for volunteers
in several areas. Most programs for the elderly, handicapped,
children and youths continue during the summer months, and the
Center can find some work for anyone with some free hours to fill.
Among the jobs listed at the Center are a recreational coor
dinator for small children, older men and women to worfc with
babies and young grade-school children, an outreach coordinator
for a veterans program and a person to play tapes and read novels
to a group of nursing-home residents.
Schedules for these and other volunteer positions range from a
few hours to several days a week; times are usually flexible For
