Math fellowship granted
Robert Smythe. associate professor of mathematics at the
University, has been appointed as a Congressional Fellow for the
coming year.
He is the only mathematician in a group of about 20 scientists,
engineers and others selected for the program in Washington. D C.
He was chosen by the American Mathematical Society, the Math
ematical Association of America and the Society for the Industrial
and Applied Mathematics
Smythe will leave the University in early September to join
either a Representative's personal staff or a Congressional sub
committee staff.
Smythe anticipates receiving an appointment in the natural
resources or science policy areas He says he sees "one aspect of
science policy-setting very intensely from the academic end." and
hopes to "obtain a wider perspective on how science is translated
into policy.”
Smythe has been on the University faculty since 1976 Before
that, he was an assistant professor at the University of Washington
and taught one semester at both the Universite de Strasbourg and
the Universite de Paris VI

Geologist receives nonor
Geologist Jane Gray, a member of the University biology
faculty, is one of 13 participants selected for the Senior Scholar
Research program by the U S Committee on Scholarly
Communication with the People s Republic of China
Gray's research on the evolution of early land plants has taken
her to various corners of the globe The main goal of her |ourney to
China, scheduled for summer I960, is to collect ancient sedimentary
rocks from which she will extract organic mtcrofossils
‘ By studying these early microfossils. I am trying to understand
the early environment that fostered development of early land
plants. Gray explains. "When was the land first populated with
plants? We really aren't sure **
About 400 to 500 appplicants entered the national competition
coordinated by the communication committee, which has been
conducting short-term scholarly exchanges between the United
States and China since 1972.
English classes offered
Lane Community College is offering English classes for foreign
students through September 7. Students may enroll at any time,
textbooks are provided and all classes are free
While the regular LCC downtown center is being remodeled,
the classes will be held at the First Methodist Church on 14th
Avenue an&*Olive Street English as a Second Language (ESL)
classes are taught on five levels from beginning to advanced and
are sponsored by the Community Education Division of LCC.
