Three get
honorary
recognition
The father of jogging, a
popular Oregon teacher and a
distinguished philanthropist
and conservationist have been
honored as recipients of the
University's Distinguished Ser
vice Awards.
Bill Bowerman and Grace
Morris of Eugene and Edmund
Hayes of Portland will receive
their awards during the Univer
sity’s 103rd commencement
, ceremony, scheduled for 2:30
p m. June 10 at Hayward Field.
The awards, an alternative to
the honorary degrees conferred
by some educational institu
tions, are given for contribution
to life in Oregon
Bowerman served as track
coach tor the University from
1948-73 and has been credited
with giving Eugene its title of
"Track City. USA." His
coaching methods are noted for
helping individuals gam athletic
and academic success.

Bowerman coached the U S
Olympic track-end-field team at
the 1972 Games in Munich
During his 24-year coaching
career at the University, he
recorded four NCAA titles,
completed 10 seasons of
undefeated dual-meet competi
tion and placed 16 teams in the
country's Top 10
Bowerman also produced 24
individual NCAA champions, 38
conference champions and 51
All-Americans Additionally.
Bowerman developed a lighter,
running shoe and an improved
track made of urethane
Morris has taught Oregon
and Pacific Northwest history at
the University through the
Division of Continuing Educa
tion for almost 30 years
She is described as a me
ticulous researcher and a
teacher of unusual ability and
enthusiasm
Morns holds bachelor’s and
master's degrees from the
University While serving as
supervisor of teacher training at
Oregon College of Education,
she developed a course on
Oregon history and began her
lifelong interest in the subject
Hayes, a retired vice
president of the Weyerhaeuser
Co . is recognized for his
philanthropy and conservation
efforts He founded the Keep
Oregon Green Association,
which has significantly con
tributed to fire prevention
Hayes is also founder of the
Willamette Valley Tree Farm
movement and has served as
president of the West Coast
Lumberman's Association

approved by the University
