Men netters finish 2nd,
set weekend tournament
The men's tennis team finished the regular
season with a second-place finish at the Pac-10
Northern Division Championships giving them a
16-11 record
The Ducks won their first round of competi
tion, defeating Seattle University 7-2 Saturday
before losing to the University of Washington 6-3
in the round-robin competition
Sunday the netters defeated Washington
State University 5-4 "It was one of the best
comebacks I’ve seen," says coach Emory "Buzz
Summers "We were in trouble at the end of the
singles — they were ahead 4-2 — but we won. It's
the only 5-4 match we’ve won this season."
The tennis season isn't over yet; 180 people
have entered the University's Spring Tennis
Championships, which will include ranking
players from the Northwest,
The three-day event, hosted by the Univer
sity men’s tennis team, will begin today at 3 p m.
on the 15th Street courts The covered courts will
have singles and doubles competition for men
and women.
The tournament s featured event will be the
men's open singles. Summer says "It should be
an excellent event to follow."
With 32 entrants in the men’s open singles —
more than any other event — the matches should
be exciting. Summers says.
Roger McKee, the defending open singles
champion, is seeded first in the tournament. The
other three seeded players are Dick McLaughlin,
Barry Sterret and Jerry Farmer, who plays for the
University
The championship meet features competi
tion in six age groups, with individual scores kept.
Preliminary competition will be held Friday
and Saturday, with the finals starting at noon
Sunday The men’s open singles finals will be at 1
p.m at the 15th Street courts
All proceeds from the event will be used to
defray the men’s tennis team’s expenses.
Summers says "We hope to make as much
money as possible, but we re also putting on a
good tournament."
‘Stars’ compete this weekend
Not just anyone can set the American record
in the 3,000 meters, and few people can throw the

Smith named all-star
Bev Smith, a member of the women's
basketball team, has been named to the All
Tournament Team of the World Basketball Tour
nament held this month in South Korea.
Smith, a starter for the Canadian National
Team, was one of five world basketball players
named to the tournament team.
The Canadian team finished the tournament
with a 7-1 record, losing the championship game
to the United States South Korea was second,
followed by Canada with third place.

Office, the events begin at 9 a m. Saturday and
end with an awards ceremony at 3 p m. Sunday.
Competition coordinator Lori Moses says the
•fun events” include the 50-yard swim,
horseshoes, Frisbee throw, 20-yard slow bike
race, skateboard slalom and two-mile, cross
campus run
The emphasis of the games will be par
ticipation as an introduction to the intramural
program.
"It's set up so that everyone will have a good
time," Moses says. "We want to let people know
what we have to offer and what fun they can
have "
