Women bag dual win overOSU
The University women's track
team had to take the good with
the bad Saturday in its 80-47
dual meet victory over Oregon
State University
Though the Ducks won
easily, the wind and rain kept
most performers from doing
their best, said coach Tom
Heinonen.
Those performers who did
well still didn't have reason to
rejoice Kris Costello apparantly
set the school record in the
100-meter hurdles with a time of
14 20. but it was later dis
covered that one of the judges
recorded the mark as wind-aid
ed. Wind-aided marks do not
qualify for school records
Heinonen said the old record
of 14 44 set by Mary Officer in
1975 may have to be respected
"If you're in any doubt, then it's
not a record, and we ll probably
never find out for sure "
But Costello was not the only
Duck to be disappointed Joan
Walton missed the regional
qualifying mark in the long jump
by only one inch "She jumped
in conditions that were as bad
as they could be." said
Heinonen
Ellen Schmidt ran what
Heinonen called a smart 800
meter race in one of the worst
storms of the day She also
missed the qualifying mark, but
has already qualified in the
1.500 meters
"Given the fact that the meet
wasn't too competitive, the
weather was crummy and
people were looking forward to
nationals. I was pleased with
the performance." offered
Heinonen
'The first lap was kind of
slow.'* Schmidt said after the
race I didn’t get out fast
enough so my time wasn't that
quick However, I've been more
pleased with my 1.500 If I can
get a faster 800 time, then I'll go
to the nationals in that '*
Debbie Adams won the 100
meters and took second in the
200 meters, while teammate
Melanie Batiste won the 200
meters and took second in the
100 meters While their times
were good, said Heinonen. they
were also wind-aided
Oregon’s discus duo Mary
Stevenson and Kathy Picknell
went 1-2 and proved their con
sistency, said Heinonen. "Mary
and Kathy each logged one
more mark at the level of their
best throw of last season

They're about ready for a

44-6%, more than three feet
better than the second-place

justment, and she's had no
competition We re looking for
better things from her."
Hemonen said
Buntjer bettered her lifetime
best four times in the meet,
improving by 1 y* feet.
Javelin thrower Patty Kearney
took third at 140-11 in her first
meet in two weeks An ankle
injury has kept her from
approaching her school record
of 166-11, Heinonen added.
"Patty just has some work to do
to get her technique back.
She'll bounce back and throw
well at nationals
Everything went according to
plan OSU is better than they
were last year (when Oregon
won 97-29) because now
they're ottering a program But
we don't intend to let them
catch us.”
Beginning at 9 a m Friday,
the Northwest Collegiate
Women s Sports Association
meet will take place at Hayward
Field. The finals are scheduled
to begin at noon Saturday.

Tennis teams win matches
Oregon's tennis teams each recorded vic
tories Friday afternoon as the women buried
Puget Sound 9-0 and the men defeated a team
of Eugene All-Stars 7-2.
The womens' win concluded their regular
season. They finished with an overall record of
10-6, and were 10-3 in the Northwest.
Patti McKenna and Patti Marihart sparked
the womens' victory McKenna defeated Puget
Sound's Gini Henderson 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the
top singles match. At number two singles.
Marihart stopped Michelle Prince 7-5; 6-1
The women will now prepare for the NCWSA

Championships at Corvallis The cham
pionships begin Thursday and continue
through Saturday
In the mens' match, Oregon singles players
Gerry Farmer, Tom Goldman and Thor Carl
son all won In the number one singles match,
the All-Stars' Roger McKee, a former Oregon
State player, defeated the Ducks' Tom Greider
4-6; 6-3; 6-1 Oregon clinched the match by
sweeping the doubles
The men conclude their season Monday
when they face Lewis and Clark College at the
15th Street Courts

Rain forced the cancellation of all three
Duck baseball games scheduled for the
weekend. The games were to be a league
series with the University of Washington, and
Duck coach Mel Krause reports the ramouts
will not be rescheduled.
The Ducks. 12-25 this season, travel to
Portland’s Civic Stadium on Tuesday for a
contest with Portland State University The
next home game will be Wednesday against
Oregon College of Education
The final league series of the season begins
Friday, when the Ducks host Oregon State
University in a single game at Howe Field. Both
teams conclude their Northern Division
schedules on Saturday with a doubleheader in
Corvallis
