Kennedy rips
opponents of
nuclear pact
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Edward
M. Kennedy said Tuesday that critics of an
arms control agreement with the Soviets
"undermine our national security by ad
vocating a nuclear arms race instead of
nuclear arms control.”
In a speech to the annual meeting of the
Arms Control Association, the Mas
sachusetts Democrat lashed out at what
he called “partisan voices” that “do our
nation a grave disservice."
“They exaggerate the real problems
which we face and they fail to offer ade
quate alternatives,” he said. “They sell
America short."
Kennedy criticized Dr. Henry A. Kis
singer as one of those who “withhold their
support despite their participation in the
long and difficult negotiating process.”
Kennedy’s speech came hours after
President Carter, in an address in Atlanta,
made a strong appeal for support of the
SALT agreement he said was nearly
completed.
