    Total eclipse shows ancient shroud
By ROBERT SCHEYER
Of the Emerald
At approximately 8:13 on the
morning of Feb. 26, the moon’s
shadow will touch the Pacific
Coast near Astoria and sweep up
the Columbia River like a giant
wave.
Inhabitants of the Pacific
Northwest will have the good for
tune of seeing the last total eclipse
of the sun on the North American
continent this century. For most,
the total eclipse will be a once
in-a-lifetime experience.
Day will turn suddenly into
night. Summer constellations will
peek out and chickens will go to
roost. And as suddenly as dark
ness fell, light will return.
People who have witnessed a
total eclipse (when the sun’s face
is obscured by the moon) say an
eerie feeling comes over them.
Records of ancient civilizations
show the totality of the occurr
ence, shrouded in superstitions
and religious rites.
To early man, a total eclipse
carried the significance of life, for if
light was lost, so was existence.
Antique races believed the sun
was being swallowed by a mon
ster and something bad was im
minent.
The Shinto religion ordained
that at the time of an eclipse cer
tain jewels, regarded as amulets,
should be suspended from the
highest branches of the sacred
tree Cleyera. The jewels’ bril
liance suggested the light of the
sun which was to be restored.
The ancient Chinese thought a
dragon was feeding on the sun
and beat drums and fired arrows
to scare away the beast. The
Chinese ruler was thought to cor
respond to the sun and the eclipse
was regarded as a threat from
God to the emperor.
The Assyrians of Babylon be
lieved the spirit influence of the
seven accursed brothers caused
eclipses. How to thwart these
brothers is described in a charm’
that said, “We go on our hands, so
that we may eat flesh and we
crawl upon our hands, so that we
may drink blood.”
The Armenians of Iran thought

primeval ox (an evil star), passed
between the sun and the Earth. It
was, moreover, a popular belief
that a sorcerer using witchcraft
could bring down these dark
bodies from heaven.
In Egypt the king would walk
ceremonially (and sunwise)
around the temple.
In early North American history
many cultures attached sexual
connotations to a total eclipse.
The Alaskan Tlingits thought an
eclipse occurred when the female
moon visited her husband the sun.
Among the Eskimos was the belief
that the sun and moon are brother
and sister who commit incest dur
ing an eclipse.
Among Indian tribes, an eclipse
meant great peril and most prom
ised to lead better lives. They
would try to scare off whatever
was blocking the sun with loud
noises that included beating and
twisting dogs’ ears to make them
squeal.
The Yukon Indians who thought
an unclean emanation descended
during the eclipse, turned over
their pots and pans and wouldn’t
come outside.
The general populace of early
middle America believed the sun
was fighting with the earth or that a
Jaguar was devouring the sun.
Many groups thought that preg
nant women who gaze at an ec
lipse would give birth to a harelip
ped child.
On Feb. 26, you can find out
what significance a total eclipse
has to modem man.
