Ducks’ and Beavers’ women b-ballers
face off today in crucial league contest

The women’s basketball team
travels to Corvalis for their first
road game of the year against
Oregon State this afternoon.
The Ducks, with a 9-0 season
and 4-0 in Northwest Women’s
Basketball League record, face
the Beavers, 7-1 on the season
and 3-1 in NWBL play, in Gill Col
iseum at 5 p.m.
“The gym will be different; it will
be empty behind the baskets
and they’ve got scoreboards be
hind the backboards. We’ve got to
be really sharp and really concert
trate,” says Oregon coach Elwin
Heiny.
“We know Oregon State is a
much improved team. They play
very good defense and they do
have good size.”
Carol Menken, 6’4", has been
the Beavers main offensive
weapon this year, leading the
NWBL in scoring (25.1 points per
game). In her iast three games
she has scored, in order, 30, 37
and 38 points. Her 38 points
against Oregon College of Educa
tion was an OSU record. She also
has been rebounding at an 12.6
per game clip, second in the

LOS ANGELES (AP) — NBC is
getting stiffed in the ratings. It
faces dismal prospects for the
near future. But for one day, at
least, the No. 3 network has the
only show in town.
Super Bowl Sunday Inads on
NBC's calendar this year, and the
other two networks might as well
shut down operations until it's
over.
This isn't a holiday. It's a na
tional obligation.
Super Bowl parties are thrown
by people who don't know what a
football is. Football widows who
considered divorce during the
regular season suddenly start talk
ing point spreads. Competing en
tertainment enterprises, such as
race tracks, plan their events
around it.
The game is always dull. And
we always watch it.
So you can’t blame NBC for
milking the thing. Ratings have re
vealed America's gluttonous ap
petite for the Super Bowl, and
NBC is more than happy to cater
the affair.
The feast starts Saturday with
"Super Bowl Saturday Night," an
inane variety-type show in which
athletes and actors sing and
dance and do other things people
wouldn't ordinarily watch them do.

calling the game, hosts one
and-a-half hours of Sports World,

junk. They think well sit and watch
three-and-a-half hours of prefoot
ball football. We will.
"You know, I've looked at past
Super Bowls and wondered if it's
too much,” says Chet Simmons,
head of NBC sports.

fend Menken, he replied, “We'll
play her like we play everyone.
We won't change anything. If we
could play good team defense like
we did against Hawaii (holding the

second half), our team will come
together."
"Our team is very dependent on
defense,” says Oregon State’s
first year coach Aki Hall. “But
Oregon is 10 (points per game)
ahead of us offensively.”
Both teams like to run, and Hall
says the key for Oregon State is
controlling the tempo.
“If we let them play their tempo,
they will run over us. I just told my
players we have to play our
tempo. Oregon is very strong on
rebounding.
“The key for us is how we keep
our intensity on defense. Bev
Smith likes to play full court
games.”
The Beavers also have a pair of
fine guards, Betty Collins, the
league leader in assists with
nearly six each game, and Mangy
Becker, who is third in the league
in assists with a 4.5 average. In
OSU’s game with Boise State,
Collins passed out a school record
with 12 assists.
DUCK NOTES—Bev Smith
was named NWBL player of the
week for her 58 point 47 rebound,
three game series last week. She
scored 35 points, grabbed 17 re
bounds and had nine steals
against Boise State.
Women gymnasts
meet Chico State
The women’s gymnastics team,
6-0 on the season, will be shooting
for a season high 130 points when
they entertain Cal State-Chico
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Mac
Court.

Montana last week. Freshman
Dawn Haberland won the vault

33.22 points. Teammates Wendy
Halberg (first on the bars with 8.26
points) and Sara Gustafson (first
on the beam, 7.90, and the floor,
8.46) completed the Oregon
sweep of the meet.
