The University Housing De
partment began work Thursday to
improve a University Inn security
problem that resulted in the theft
of more than $3,000 worth of
items during the Thanksgiving
holiday break.
The housing office staff met
Wednesday afternoon to discuss
ways to tighten security at the inn,
Assistant Director Don Moon Lee
said.
The office chose to direct the
University locksmith to remove
master key access to individual
student rooms. University Inn staff
and custodians have accounted
for their 14 master keys but an
additional key, issued to a staff
member last year, was lost in
March.
The 252-room building was not
re-keyed last spring because of
higher priorities in renovating the
inn, according to the housing of
fice. A new system must be
factory-engineered and would
cost about $26,000.
University Vice-president Ray
Hawk says the University does not
have a policy of re-keying build
ings when master keys are lost.
“We have to decide whether the
cost of re-keying will be suffi
ciently offset by improved condi
tions,” Hawk says. “In the case of
the University Inn, which is proba
bly the most complex unit on cam
pus, the task of re-keying is
monumental.
“Our experience with security
there has been good until now so
we gave life safety programs,
such as a sprinkling system,
higher priority,” he adds.
Although the housing office is
removing master key access to
separate rooms, re-keying is not
scheduled for the building until
1979 or early 1980, says H. P.
Barnhart, director of the housing
department.
Re-keying has been in a reno
r
vation plan for the inn since the
University purchased it in 1975.
Other items in the plan include
remodeling of the kitchen, repair
of showers, replacement of car
pets, drapes and lounge furniture,
and installation of smoke detec
tors and a sprinkler system.

on campus will be moved to
another dormitory and only staff
and custodians will be able to
enter, he savs.
The Eugene Police Department
continues its investigation of the
break-in. There was no evidence
of forced entry.
