The University s foolball team voted
Bruce Beekfey as winner of the Vernon
Hoffman Most Valuable Player Award in
Monday s awards banquet
Beekley was also named to the
Pae-10's Challenge Bowl team (Pac-10
aH-stars play Big-10 all-stars), along with
teammate Bril Hoffman. Beekley set a
school record this year with 190 tackles,
and was named Pac-10 Player of the
Week for his effort against Oregon
State.
Hoffman shared the Soistrom Award
with Wllie Blasher. The award is given to
the player(s) who best exemplify the
ideal of the scholar-athfete-citizen.
Hoffman was the offensive captain
against Colorado and Wisconsin, and
was a starting tackle all year.
Linebacker Blasher was second on
the team in tackles for the second year in
a row and recovered two fumbles.
Blasher was also selected to play in
the Can-Am Bowl.
The Clarke Award for the most im
proved playerf s) went to fullback Vince
Williams and defensive tackle Terry
Dion.
Williams was the top sophomore
rusher in Oregon history, gaining 842
yards on the season. After two years, he
« just 62 yards away from toeing one of
the top 10 career rushers at Oregon, and
his efforts this season were the fourth
best in Oregon history.
Dion lead the team in tackles for los
ses with 14 and was sixth in tackles. He
caused four fumbles and recovered two.
The Bob Officer Award was given to
Pete Laughlin for playing with pan. An
offensive lineman. Laughlin underwent
two knee operations in the last three
years. He has also had tom thumb liga
ments, a chipped lower leg bone, and a
recurring groin injury.
The Len Casanova Award for best first
year varsity player was given to Neil El
shire. The sophomore defensive line
man was injured and did not play last
yea. but was fifth in the team in tackles
with 70 this yea.
Elshire predicted a the banquet that
we l be in the Rose Bowl soon, maybe
next yea." and the team vowed to win
more than two games next yea.
Senior defensive back Kenny Bryant
was selected to partidpate in the East
West AM Star game and senior running
back Ed Radciiff was awarded a special
citation from the Ohio Legislature for his
achievements in football.

NEW YORK (AP) — In the sec
ond dosest vote in history, Bitty
Sims, Oklahoma s record-setting
running tack, won the 44th annual
Heisman Trophy Tuesday al
though he received 12 fewer
first-place votes than Penn State
quarterback Chuck Fusma.
Sims, a 6-foot, 205-pound
blend of power and speed, came
to Oklahoma from Hooks. Tex., in
1975 as one of the most heavily
recanted players ever but suffered
a string of nagging injuries and
was redshirted while missing al
most aH of the 1976 season.
This year, however, he is the
nation's leading rusher and scorer
and smashed the Oklahoma and
Big Eight Conference single
season records by romping for
1,762 yards in 11 games and av
eraging 7.6 yards per carry while
scoring 20 touchdowns. During
the season, he tied a national re
cord by rushing for 200 or more
yards in three consecutive games.
“I never thought I would win it,
but I thought I was going to be
dose," said Sims, onty the sixth
junior ever to win the Heisman.

tive steals by Dave Twardzik and
Ron Brewer broke open a dose
game and ignited the Portland
Trail Blazers in their 102-97 Na
tional Basketbai Association vic
tory over ihe Boston Celtics Tues
day night.
The Blazers won their second
game in a row while the Celtics
lost their second straight.
The Blazers led 96-91 when
Twardzik stripped the bail from
Billy Knight and drove the length
of the floor for a layup, giving the
Blazers a seven-point lead with
2D1 remaining
Brewer followed with a deflec
tion of a Jo Jo White pass It re
sulted in two Brewer free throws
and gave the Blazers a 100-91
lead with 1 51 left
