PARIS (AP) — The man who
may shape the future of Iran, a
country ravaged by political vio
lence and crippling strikes, smiles
gently as he speaks of his follow
ers cutting Iranian policemen to
pieces.
There is no visible sign of the
firebrand fanatic in the Ayatullah
Khomaini. The old man sitting
cross-legged on the floor of his
suburban home rarely raises his
voice. But that gentle voice, exiled
from Iran since 1963, has aroused
revolt among Shiite Moslems,
who constitute more than 90 per
cent of Iran’s population.
The embattled government of
Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi
has accused Khomaini of mas
terminding a campaign to impose
an anti-Western regime on one of
the West’s crucial suppliers of oil.
Khomaini rejects the accusation
that he is anti-Western.
‘‘I am neither. anti-Western nor
anti-Soviet,” he told an inter
viewer. ”l am pro-Iranian, and I am
against allowing American in
terests to rob Iran of its natural
wealth.”
Khomaini makes no secret of
his hatred for the shah and has
said in interviews that he wants to
depose him and form an "Islamic
republic." If the present effort fails,
he said, he will call for all-out civil
war.
He said he would reject any al
liance with Iran’s communists —
even to overthrow the shah — be
cause they are "against God.” But
he never has concealed his admi
ration for the late Prime Minister
Mohamed Mossadegh, whose
seizure of Iran’s Western-run oil
industry in 1951 threw the West
into its first oil crisis.
The crisis in Iran was sparked
by orthodox Moslems demanding
an end to the shah's westernizing
reforms, which they say are con
trary to the Koran, the Moslem
holy book. They were joined by
the political opposition and hun
dreds of thousands of strikers. It is
estimated that more than 1,000
persons have died in civil strife
since January.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Larry Flynt publishing company
executive was shot from ambush Monday night, deputies said,
eight months to the day that Flynt was shot from ambush and left
paralyzed in Georgia.
Walter William Abrams, 33, of Mount Sterling was shot once
in the chest with a high-powered weapon, said Franklin County
sheriff’s deputies. He was listed in guarded condition in University
Hospital here early today.
The shooting occurred as Abrams and Flynt's brother,
Jimmy, left the headquarters of theirfirm. Leisure Time Products,
and walked to their cars.
NEW YORK — The city's anti-dog doo law is such a
success that "New Yorkers are finding it easier to walk the streets
with their heads held high again,” says Mayor Edward Koch.
Koch said Tuesday his conclusion was based on reports of
public compliance with the law which went into effect last Aug. 1.
Despite initial public skepticism, the mayor said: ‘‘Today, I
can safely say the law is working and is serving as a model for
other cities throughout the world."
Under the law, people walking dogs are required to pick up
their pets' droppings or face fines of up to $100. The mayor said
that in the first three months, a total of 4,298 dog owners cleaned
up the droppings after being warned by law enforcement officers
that they would be issued summonses.
PORTLAND — The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission
has ordered an immediate emergency closure to all fishing on a
section of the Trask River in Tillamook County.
The commission closed the section between the mouths of
Hatchery and Blue Ridge creeks Monday because salmon have
congregated in the area and are being snagged by fishers. The
closure continues through Dec. 15.
A Fish and Wildlife Department representative said the
commission acted to ensure enough salmon are left in the riverfor
spawning. Snagging is the illegal practice of hooking fish other
than in their mouths.
MOSCOW — The Soviet Union marked the 61 st anniver
sary of the Bolshevik Revolution Tuesday with a huge Red
Square military parade and a remark by President Leonid Brezh
nev that the past year had some "rainy days.”
Thousands of Soviet troops marched through the snow
dusted square under the gaze of the Soviet leadership.
This year's display of military hardware featured 200 vehi
cles of 15 different types, rumbling tanks, armored personnel
carriers, rocket launchers, and surface-to-air missiles. But West
ern military observers said they saw no new weapons in the show
