Ducks’ next assignment: San Jose State

key team warmed up for
tomorrow's game with nationally
ranked San Jose State by crush
ing Oregon College of Education
9-0 at Autzen Stadium Tuesday
night.
Karen Coster punched through
three goals and freshman Ronnie
Dellamotta added her eighth and
ninth goals of the season to pace
the Ducks’ lopsided victory. Six
Oregon players scored and the
team as a whole outshot OCE
37-0 as Oregon raised its season
record to 8-1-1 and league mark to
6-0.
Tomorrow afternoon’s Ore
gon-San Jose State match
pits two of the strongest women’s
collegiate field hockey programs
on the West Coast. San Jose
State, undefeated this year with
an 8-0 season record, finished
fourth at last year’s national tour
nament.
“I was very pleased with the
way we passed the ball,” com
mented Oregon coach Nancy
Plantz. “We beat them with speed
and superior stickwork.”
Forward Stacy Allman opened
the game with a quick goal on a
rush to the net from the right side;
Belinda Stillwell then weaved
through three OCE defenders for
another goal, and Dellamotta tal
lied twice to increase Oregon's
margin to 4-0. Karen Cosper
closed out the Ducks’ first half bar
rage with a shot from the left side.
Oregon kept OCE bottled up on
defense throughout all of the sec
ond half, while three players —
Cosper, Nancy Pedrotti and Sue
Minkoma — were adding a goal
each to build Oregon’s lead to 8-0.
Cosper closed out the Ducks’
scoring binge with a sizzling slap
shot from 15 yards out.
Plantz applauded Allman, Del
lamotta and Minkoma for strong
games (all are freshmen), and
singled out junior Stillwell and
Cosper, a transfer from Oregon
State, for their fine performances.
Against San Jose State the
Ducks will be facing a team that
has scored 38 times this year
while allowing a single goal.
The Spartans feature a
27-year-old South African who
plays center-defense and is the
major reason San Jose State has
gained national recognition, ac
cording to Plantz.
“They beat two eastern teams
— Connecticut and Delaware —
at last year's national," recalled
Plantz. “They are a really good
team.''
Friday could be a dear indicator
of how close to that goal Oregon
has come.
Saturday the Ducks play host to
Idaho at 9:30 a m. and the Port
land Road runners at 12:30 p.m. in
the Oregon Invitational at Autzen
Stadium.
