Duck netters whip SOSCfor first victory

their first win of the season.
Unfortunately, Voelz didn’t get
to stay in her comfort zone for
long, as Oregon College of Educa
tion outplayed Oregon in the finale
of Wednesday night’s triple
header in Mac Court 15-10, 5-15,
15-10, 17-15.
Voelz, who stresses to her
players the power of “positive
thinking”, defines her comfort
zone as a sense of security or of
feeling “at ease in a situation.” Be
fore the Southern Oregon match
Voelz didn’t have much to feel
secure about.
After an opening season loss to
powerful Portland State, the
Ducks got walloped in five straight
matches at the Berkeley Invita
tional last weekend.
“We beat them (SOSC) at the
net,” explained Voelz. "Our spik
ers were far better, especially
Christie McFarlane who played
her best game of the year.”
“Shawna (Baxter) played a
great all-around game, and Kim
Jessup was outstanding on of
fense,” she continued.
Against OCE, the Ducks played
well in spurts, but made too many
mental errors at critical points.
According to Voelz, the lack of
seasoned players is still hurting
the Ducks. "We play in spurts be
cause so many of our players are
freshmen and sophomores Our
setters lack pizazz. We re making
too many communication errors.”
The third set against OCE was a
case in point. Leading 4-0,
Oregon began making a series of
mental miscues that allowed OCE
to score 10 straight points and
take a 10-4 lead. The Ducks came
back tying it at 10-10, but couldn’t
pull out a win.
Voelz is back to looking for her
“comfort zone”, and the women's
volleyball team is 1-7 and headed
for the Portland Invitational this
weekend.
Oregon plays in the “white”
pool, which includes Nevada
Reno, Washington State, Victoria,
Oregon State, and Western
Washington.
“I don’t know much about the
teams in our pool right now,” said
Voelz, “but Nevada-Reno beat us
at the Berkeley Invitational."
The Ducks face Nevada-Reno
and Oregon State tonight, then
take on Washington State, West
ern Washington, and Victoria
Saturday.

Guidry won 25 games and lost
only three for the American
League champions during the
regular season, including the
climactic AL East playoff against
Boston. Then he won the equally
climactic fourth game of the AL
championship series that thrust
the Yanks into their third straight
World Series.
Opposing Guidry will be Dodger
right-hander Don Sutton, who
grew up dreaming of the day he
would pitch in the Stadium, always
hoping it would be for the Yank
ees, not against them.
Last year he opened the Series
in New York, pitching seven in
nings of a game the Yanks won
4-3 in 12 innings.
