Student-athletes fight
'dumb jock' comparison
“I came here with the attitude that football
players on scholarships got favors, but I was
rudely awakened. The instructors look at you
just like anybody else,” says senior running back
Ed Radcliff.
This misconception is often shared by those
unfamiliar with the philosophy of the University
and its athletic department. “The single most
important goal that we have is that we want them
(the athletes) to graduate,” says John Caine,
athletic director.
Caine emphasizes that the athlete has the
responsibility as a student to progress toward a
degree. “When we recruit, they learn that they
must make it in the classrooms,” he says.
