Japan, US students
to set peace plan
Japanese and American students will observe
“International Peace Day" on Aug. 15 during the
Eugene-headquartered segment of the 30th annual
Japan-America Student Conference. Aug. 10 to Aug.
21.
The month-long 1978 conference begins Wed
nesday, July 26, at the University of Washington in
‘ Seattle and ends Aug. 25 at the University of Califor
nia at Berkeley, after stop-overs in Portland, Eugene
and Ashland between Aug. 7 to Aug. 22.
While in Eugene, the student delegates will
hammer out a declaration calling for international
peace and send 15 representatives to Washington
D C. and New York City to deliver the message to
members of Congress and the United Nations.
The 1978 conference will focus on “Crisis and
Stability in Modern Societies” and will include con
sideration of issues ranging from the pros and cons
of nuclear power and national defense to the imbal
ance of payments between Japan and the United
States.

recreation activities and brush up on old skills August 5, 10 a.m.-4 p.m at
Amazon Pool and Community Center Swimming, relays, games and a water
obstacle course; canoeing, kayaking and an inner-tube water polo game are on
tap and wi* be offered from 9:30 a m to noon.
Participants can try archery, table tennis, track and field and perhaps vol
leybel and football from 1-4 p.m. in the park and at the community center In the
evening, there will be an exhibition wheelchair basketball game at Sheldon

Prof, elected
as Demo chairer
University Prof. Jim Klonoski, political science,
was re-elected to a third term as State Democratic
Party chairer Sunday afternoon.
By nearly a two-to-one margin, Klonoski de
feated Portland manufacturer Moshe Lenske and
Medford insurance salesman John DeZell for the
position. Benton County Democrat Marge King nar
rowly defeated Emily Ashworth, a challenger for the
Democratic nomination for governor, for vice
chairer.
During his acceptance speech, Klonoski called
Oregon’s Measure 6 “socialization of the rich" and
said the party should oppose it in the November
election.
State Sen. Vern Cook, D-Gresham, also speak
ing at the afternoon luncheon, told party members
the property tax limitation measure is bad for Oregon
and should be opposed by Democrats statewide.
Workshop designed
to assist employees
A workshop for labor union members focusing
on grievance procedures will be held at the Univer
sity July 30 to Aug. 2.
Representatives of the U.S. Department of
Labor, the Oregon Employment Relations Board, the
Oregon Department of Education, Clatsop Commun
ity College, the LERC staff and several state public
employees unions and associations wiH assist with
the workshop, which is sponsored by the University's
Oregon Labor Education and Research Center
(LERC).
Sessions begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, and start at 9
p.m. the following days in Henderson Hall.
The $50 registration fee provides all materials,
lodging and meals in the dormitories.
For an additional $30, participants may obtain
two hours of graduate-level academic credit by regis
tering with the University’s Division of Continuing
Education at the beginning of the workshop.
