Guitarist John McLaughlin
sets two jazz/rock shows
Guitarist John McLaughlin will
bring his One Truth Electirc Band
to Eugene tonight for 8 and 11
p.m. shows at The Place.
Formerly scheduled for the
Lane County Civic Center, the
concerts will both be at The Place,
where it is ‘21 and over only.” Re
funds will be given to those ticket
holders under 21.
McLaughlin, known primarily for
his jazz/rock fusion work with
Mahavishnu Orchestra, has only
recently returned to the electric
guitar, with the album John
McLaughlin, Electric Guitarist He
has been performing with the
acoustic group Shakti since he
dissolved the Orchestra.
The last 20 years have seen
McLaughlin play with a number of
groups and artists, and he has
been involved in the production of
several major recordings. He
played in the early 60s with a vari
ety of jazz, rock and R&B bands,
most notably Brian Auger and the
Graham Bond Organization.
He became increasingly in
terested in experimental jazz, re
cording Where Fortune Smiles
with Dave Hoi and and John Sur
nam.
McLaughlin then performed
with Miles Davis, more notably on
In a Silent Way, Live-Evil, and the
influential Bitches Brew. He also
performed during that period with
the Tony Williams Lifetime, which
included bass player Jack Bruce.
McLaughlin formed the
Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1972.
Along with Jerry Goodman, Billy
Cobham. Jan Hammer and Rick
Laird, he recorded The Inner
Mounting Flame. Birds of Fire and
John McLaughlin
Between Nothingness and
Eternity. The group gained a con
siderable reputation for their con
certs, which were characterized
by waves of intense, thundering
music. The group was in the van
guard of the so-called jazz/rock
fusion.
McLaughlin become increas
ingly interested in the teachings of
Indian master Sri Chinmoy, and in
1973 collaborated with Cartos
Santana on Love, Devotion,
Surrender.
A second edition of the
Mahavishnu Orchestra, with
Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin,
recorded three more albums.
McLaughlin’s most recent re
cording includes Carlos Santana,
Tony Williams, Jack Bruce, Chick
Corea, Stanley Clarke, Jack De
Johnette, Jerry Goodman and
Billy Cobham.
