PULLMAN, Wash. — After
dropping its first two matches of
the weekend, Oregon’s men’s
tennis team rallied to beat Seattle
University, 6-3, here Sunday in
the final round of the Pac-8 North
ern Division Tennis Champion
ships.
The Ducks, who had lost to
Washington and Washington
State the two previous days, won
four of the six singles matches and
two of three doubles contests.

ATLANTA (AP) — Hubie
Brown, who said he drove his At
lanta Hawks “unmercifully hard,’’
Monday was named the National
Basketball Association’s Coach of
the Year for the 1977-78 season.
Brown received 28V2 votes to
beat Lenny Wilkens, head coach
of the Seattle Supersonics.
Softball team
plays Portland
The NCWSA Championship
softball tournament, cancelled
last weekend due to rain in Seat
tle, has been slated to start today
in Medford.
Oregon will travel to face Port
land State, weather permitting, in
a game that will be followed by
Southern Oregon taking on OCE.
The winners of those two games
will play each other to determine
the second-place berth to the
AIAW tournament.
Oregon State, voted the
number one team in the region,
has already been admitted to the
national championships.

Oregon JV softball team
finishes in second place
Oregon’s junior varsity softball
team dropped a Saturday game to
Lewis and Clark, 10-1, but came
back to beat Puget Sound, 4-1,
Sunday to even its record to 5-5.
The Ducks finished second in
their league, tied with Yakima Col
lege.
In the Saturday game, Lewis
and Clark exploded for ten runs in
the fourth inning. Because of the
ten run rule which rules that any
team leading by at least ten runs
after four innings wins the game,
the game ended when the last run
scored. The Ducks scored their
single tally in the first inning.
Sunday, Oregon scored all its
runs in the first inning, while Puget
Sound scored its lone run in the
fourth. Winning pitcher Trish Pearl
allowed only three hits in improv
ing her record to 5-3. Sharon Mar
zano was two-for-two with a triple
and two runs batted in, while
Karen Duckett also had two hits.

Men’s tennis bounces back
for third division tourney
one singles player, tipped SU’s
Kirk MacGregor in three sets, 3-6,
7-5, 6-4 while Russ Childers, Eric
Lehto, and Tom Goldman also
won.
Wilson and Goldman won the
number two doubles match, while
Lehto and Lowell captured the
number three pairs.
Oregon finished in third place in
the division, and ended the regu
lar season with an 8-10 record.
Washington captured the
division’s top spot, followed by
WSU in second place.
The Ducks conclude the year
with the Oregon Spring Champ
ionships this weekend.

i Lacrosse club splits two
The Oregon Lacrosse club split a pair of games over the
weekend, losing to Oregon State, 11-4, on Saturday, but beating
Portland Lacrosse Club, 11-1, on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Ducks were led by Brent Summers with two
goals and three assists, and John Libby, who had one goal and
two assists. This coming weekend the team finishes the 1978
schedule against two Seattle-area teams at the 18th and Agate
field.
Women’s soccer beats SOSC
Oregon’s women’s soccer team made a trip to Ashland
worthwhile by beating SOSC, 9-0, on Sunday.
The leading scorer for the Ducks was Sharon Refven, who
had four goals.
Table Tennis gets firsts
John Kretch mer, a member of the Oregon Table Tennis club,
took first place in the Pacific Northwest Open’s “C” singles divi
sion in Portland last weekend.
Also taking firsts for Oregon were Axel Kalb and Tom Modica
in the “D" doubles division.
