Straub takes timber money
Martin hauls in the most donations
SALEM (AP) — Former Gov. Tom
McCall has garnered the most campaign
money from out-of-state, while Gov. Bob
Straub is the easy leader in collecting cash
from lumber interests.
Those are among the disclosures on
campaign finance reports filed by the top
spending candidates for governor in
Oregon’s May 23 primary election.
Straub, a Democrat seeking a second
term against six challengers in the primary,
and the three Republicans with the most
money have raised a total of more than
$400, OCX).
Seven Republicans are seeking the
nomination for governor.
Of those, state Rep. Roger Martin of Lake
Oswego has the biggest war chest. He had
collected $164,000 as of April 23, according
to reports filed with the state Elections Divi
sion. Next was state Sen. Victor Atiyeh of
Beaverton with $91,000.
McCall, a late entry in the race who is
more widely known than his challengers
because of his two terms as governor, re
ported donations of $47,000. Straub’s main
re-election committee reported donations
of $119,000.
In addition, a committee formed last fall
primarily to support his candidacy listed ad
ditional contributions of $27,000 that did not
flow to the main committee.
McCall, who gained a national reputation
on environmental issues while he was gov
ernor, has collected $8,700 in donations
from out-of-state sources.
That includes $3,500 from Laurence
Rockefeller of New York City and $3,000
from New York investment counselor Dan
Lufkin.
Straub reported donations of $3,600from
out-of-state. Atiyeh received $2,650 in
out-of-state funds and Martin listed none.
Straub, who has been campaigning
heavily for improved timber management,
has attracted more than $11,000 from
timber interests.
Martin has raised about $3,800 in major
donations from lumber interests, while
Atiyeh has received $3,700 from that
source.
McCall reported no major donations from
the timber industry.
McCall received $2,000 from the Oregon
Joint Council of Teamsters. Atiyeh and Mar
tin listed no major contributions from labor
organizations.
Straub has received about $3,700 in do
nations from labor sources. The largest was
$2,500 from the Amalgamated Transit
Union, Portland.
