Ducks get ahead early and beat OSU, 94-69
By MARK STEWART
Of the Emerald
After sweeping the first three
events of the meet, the men’s
track team coasted to a 94-69 win
over the hapless Oregon State
Beavers, Saturday, at Hayward
Field.
Oregon coach Bill Dellinger
said the meet would not be a
runaway for the Ducks, but by
sweeping the hammer, shot put
and steeplechase, Oregon State
was in a hole it could not dig itself
out of point-wise. The Beavers ac
tually out-pointed Oregon 69-67
after the first three events, but just
did not have the personnel to keep
even with the Oregon weightmen
and distance runners. The Bea
vers did show some prowess by
finishing 1 -2 in the long jump, high
jump and 400 and 1-3 in the high
hurdles.
Weightman Dave Voorhees
\ t « Si -
finished second in the shot behind
teammate Jeff Stover, then stole
the show in the discus ring, throw
ing for a lifetime best 205-0, which
is the best collegiate mark in the
country so far this year.
Stover finished third in the
hammer in addition to winning the
shot with a lifetime best throw of
63-10, beating the personal re
cord he set last week by six in
ches.
“I get myself worked up to throw
a PR (personal record) every
week,” said Stover of his shot per
formance. “It’s good we (he and
Voorhees) have competition. If he
hadn’t thrown that far (61-9) I
wouldn’t have either.”
Ron Perkins, who finished sec
ond in the hammer with a throw of
182-7, his personal best, became
the third Oregon hammer thrower
to qualify for both the Pac-8 and
NCAA meets.
Chris Goodrich provided a sur
prise in the 100, filling in for Don
Coleman who is still side-lined
with muscle spasms, by finishing
second to Andrew Banks in a
lifetime best time of 10.63. Good
rich also would have set a per
sonal record in the high hurdles if it
hadn’t been for excessive wind.
“My leg is better,” said Cole
man, who will probably not run
again until the Pac-8 meet. “I will
put all my money in the Pac-8 and
try not to go broke.”
Greg Walton ran for the first
time in three weeks, but in the 800
instead of the 400 where he had
run previously. In the first 800 of
his career, Walton ran 1:52.96, a
second and a half slower than the
Pac-8 qualifying time.
"I was not pleased with the run, I
wanted someone to go out and
lead,” said Walton. “It felt com
fortable for the first time I’ve ever
run it. I feel really good about it. I
feel I can get 46.0 in the quarter
(mile) but I don’t have 21-22 sec
ond speed. I feel I can be a threat
in the half (mile).”
Matt Centrowitz qualified for the
NCAA and AAU meets with his
13:48.41 time in the 5000.
“It was just a fun run, I ran a
relaxed pace,” said Centrowitz. “I
had to run it like a time trial. If that
felt hard, I’m never going to win
the AAU.”

of the tournament’s final day, and
Scott Tuttle's first round 65.
Tuttle’s final count of 210 tied him
for fifth place individually along
with teammate Brent Murray, who
again played well, carding sub-par
rounds of 68 and 69 in the first two
days of the tournament.
Although USC will be playing on
its home course, a course none of
the Ducks have ever seen, and
USC finished ahead of Oregon
Saturday by no means counts
Oregon out. Oregon finally got
solid play from everyone, includ
ing top men Jeff Sanders (69 on
Saturday). Scott Krieger’s even
par 72 gave the Ducks a team total
of seven under par on the final
day, which was the best score
posted by any team for Saturday.
As a team, Oregon shattered all

previous marks for its annual stop
in Phoenix. The team total was an
unbelievable 42 shots better than
its best performance of the past.
In regard to the next two days in
Los Angeles, Oregon Coach Jim
Fergusen wouldn’t make any pre
dictions on the Duck’s chances
against USC.
“It should be a really close tour
nament, sort of an endurance con
test because we play 36 holes
each day. It will probably come
down to who is strongest at the
end.”
Sprinters lead women on a rout
By CHRISTY BODE
Of the Emerald
Oregon’s female sprint depart
ment captured the limelight in a
dual meet on Saturday at Hay
ward Field, as the women beat
OSU by a score of 97-29.
Talented speedsters Debbie
Adams and Melanie Batiste cros
sed the tape to finish first and sec
ond in the 100 and 200 meter
dashes, slashing University and
meet records and qualifying for
the AIAW Championships in the
process.
“The sprinters outstood
everyone. It was a good day; the
sun was shining, so they just went
out and did it,” beamed coach
Tom Heinonen. “They have been
hammering away for seven
months.”
Adams’ times of 11.65 in the
100 and 24.08 in the 200 meters
possible rank her sixth in the na
tion.
Heinonen indicated that there
are strong possibilities of Adams
reaching the finals at the nationals
in her sprint specialties. “There
are some real classy runners but
she can make things happen.
They (Adams and Batiste) ran
times today that they never ran
before,” he confirmed.
Adams and Batiste then joined
Dawna and Georgene Rose, qual
ifying for the AIAW meet in the 440
relay, smashing both the field and
meet records. Later, the Rose sis
ters each chalked up individual
record wins in the 400 and 400
meter hurdles.
But the sprinters were not the

only sources of pleasure for
Heinonen. Patty Kearney upset
OSU freshman Kitsy Hall, the na
tional prep holder and early favo
rite in the javelin. Kearney set a
new meet mark of 148-1, qualify
ing for the nationals by more than
eight feet.
In the discus, Kathy Picknell
beat teammate Stevenson and
the Beaver’s Jean Melson, tos
sing 1 49-1 for a meet record which
also qualifies her for national
competition set for May in Knox
ville, Tennessee.
For a different twist, Ellen
Schmidt, who usually runs the 800
and 1,500 meters, entered and
easily won the 3,000 meters in
9:56.3.
Although Schmidt’s time was
under the national qualifying
standard, she had hoped to finish
in a time closer to 9:40. “It was a
different race. This race is kind of
a mind trip because in the 800 you
have no time to think but in the
3,000 you have to think,"she said.
