Indian politician to speak
Acharya Tadbhavananda Av
adhuta, a yoga monk and social
activist from India, will lecture on
“New Age Politics" Sunday at
7.30 p.m. in the EMU, room to be
posted.
He will relate his experiences
doing underground political work
in India during Indira Gandhi’s rule
and will discuss his views on the
emergence of a new socio
political ideology based on the
humanistic values of Eastern
spirituality.
Avadhuta’s visit to Eugene is
part of a nation-wide tour spon
sored by PROUTist Universal, a
newly formed organization work
ing to propagate a new social
philosophy called the Progressive
Utilitzation Theory (PROUT).
PROUT is based o the writings of
the Indian spiritual philosopher
and teacher PR Sarkar. It com
bines a progressive political out
look with humanistic and spiritual
values.
Avadhuta spent the last 15
years doing political work in India.
When the state of emergency was
declared by Indira Gandhi in 1975,
which banned all political parties
except the Congress Party and
the Communist Party of India,
Tadbhavananda went under
ground to organize the oppostion.
He helped form the All India
Emergency Body to guide opposi
tion activities and was arrested in
March 1977.
