Haney gets his first recruits from LA area

The Jim Haney era of Oregon
basketball received its first two di
vidends yesterday, as the Ducks
announced two Los Angeles area
prep stars have signed letters-of
intent.
Jerome Williams, a 6-8,
195-pound forward from
Pasadena, and Barry Walker, a
6-1, 180-pound playmaker from
Gardena both chose Oregon,
Haney announced Thursday af
ternoon.
“There are probably 20 or so
major college prospects in the
Southern California area,” Haney
said, “and both Jerome and Barry
are.”
Williams was a second-team
all-CIF player last season, averag
ing 17.4 points and 9.1 rebounds
for John Muir High School. He was
twice named to the all-Pacific
League team, and was an all
tournament selection at the An
nual Arroyo and Paramount
meets.
Walker, whose skill is at ball
handling, was the type of guard
tournement last season, aver
aged 16.2 points and dished out
7.5 assists a game for Serra High
School. Gary Talbert, the coach at
Muir, called Walker “one of the
two best guards I saw all year.”
Walker was also named to the
El Camino Real all-star team.
“These guys didn’t get the rec
ognition that some other guys
there did," Haney said, “but I’m
sure glad I got them.”
Williams is mainly a shooter, a
role he’ll figure to hold at Oregon.
“He’s a very good offensive
player,” Haney said. “One of the
goals of our team is to get the of
fense going, and we wanted to
find a forward that could help pro
vide an offensive punch. Jerome
has that ability.”

Haney was looking for what with
the departure of Mike Drummond.
“With Drummond leaving, we re
ally felt we had to get someone
who had played that position,”
Haney said of Walker. “He’s been
a point guard in high school, and
has the knowledge of that posi
tion.
"And I like knowing that there’s
somebody there who I can count
on in a situation when I need a
ballhandler.”
Division leading Ducks face defending
champion Cougars in three game series
Oregon’s baseball team will find
out if it’s for real today and Satur
day as it takes on the defending
division champion Washington
State Cougars in Pullman.
Today’s tilt is scheduled to start at
3 p.m., with Saturday’s action to
begin at 1 p.m.
Last year the Ducks finished
the season with a 14-27 record,
4-14 in league play, which put the
team in last in the Northern Divi
sion.
But this is a new year, as
Oregon showed in last weekend’s
Northern Division opening play.
The Ducks took three games from
Washington and now find them
selves in first place in the Northern
Division. However, sitting only
one game off the pace and
breathing down Oregon’s
neck is Washington State.

Soccer team to Portland
The Oregon vyomen’s soccer team will be traveling to Portland
this weekend to play in an indoor tournament at Pacific University.
The tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
Crew holds regatta
The Oregon Crew will hold its only home regatta of the year
Saturday, April 15, at Dexter Lake. Oregon’s competition will
come from Stanford and Oregon State. The Ducks will race a
lightweight and heavyweight varsity. Races begin at 9 a.m., and
the best view of the races is from the park on the north side of the
lake.
Spikers play final home game
The men’s volleyball team will play its last home game of the
season this Friday at 7 p.m. against Washington in Mac Court.
With an overall record of 7-4, the team is assured a playoff berth
in the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Volleyball Conference
Championships at Oregon State on April 21-22.
IM soccer brackets Monday
Managers of the first and second place soccer teams are to
report to the IM office Monday, April 17, at 4 p.m. for champion
ship playoff brackets.

the Ducks.
Women Netters face Washington
in match that could decide title
This weekend could decide the
course of regional hopes for the
Oregon women’s tennis team
when it plays Washington tomor
row and Washington State on
Saturday.
Oregon finished third in the
standings last year behind the two
northern schools and first-rate
tennis will be in store for the
women netters as they attempt to
unseat the Northwest powers.
Although Washington beat
Oregon 9-0 in 1977, Oregon
coach Marti Schey is, "hoping for
an upset,” knowing that her
women, “just have to play their
best tennis.” It will be the toughest
match of the season for Oregon
and number one singles player
Helen Vozenilek knows it.
‘‘They will be tough,” the
NCWSA singles titlist said.
“They’ve graduated a couple of
people but they have one girl who
may be playing number one and
she’s good.” Recently, Vozenilek
has been hampered by a sore toe
which she feels may be infected.
“I haven't been playing well re
cently so this weekend would be a
good time to start,” she said.
Marist wrestler
signs letter
Bill Nugent, one of the state’s
best wrestlers, signed a letter-of
intent Wednesday to attend
Oregon.
Nugent, of Eugene's Marist
High, won the 130 pound classifi
cation at the A A meet, and the
state Greco and free style champ
ionships for his weight class.
Nugent was also he top finisher in
the National Wrestling
Federation’s Western Regional
Championships held in Eugene.
Nugent’s brothers, Dan and
Larry, both wrestle at Southern
Oregon State College.
