Photos and story by Mike Baer
Two years after he graduated from Oregon with the conference
career scoring record and Pac-8 player-of-the-year honors, Ron Lee is
preparing to take his first shot at the NBA championship.
Lee, now in his second year with the Phoenix Suns, has ignited the
crowds in the Valley of the Sun in much the same way as he did the
crowds in the Pit.
Not noted for his scoring or rebounding, Lee is best remembered
for his hustle and his knack to make the impossible possible. Nobody
who watched Ronnie Lee hit a last second shot to defeat Stanford or
dive four rows deep in the stands to save a ball against Oregon State will
ever forget the electricity generated during the Lee era.
The first-round draft choice of the Suns in 1976, Lee, from Lexing
ton, Massachusetts, is carrying on his heroics in Phoenix without starting
every game and without averaging 20 points. Instead, he has played in
every game for the second consecutive year, and managed to top the
NBA in steals and set a Phoenix team record in that category this past
season.
Pictured here in an exhibition game against Portland’s Trailblazers
played two years ago in Mac Court, Lee has drawn praise from the
media and raves from his new Arizona fans. Not only was this Lee’s first
pro meeting with old UCLA nemesis Bill Walton, but it was also the night
Lee's familiar number 30 was retired.
To those who missed Lee at Oregon, watch him as the playoffs
begin. To those who did see him play, thank God he hasn’t changed.
