Childers wins,
but Ducks fall
to Pilots

University of Portland had a
score to settle Wednesday after
noon at the covered courts.
Portland avenged a rough
showing last year against Oregon
by blasting the Ducks 6-3 and
dropping Oregon’s record on the
season to 3-7.
Last season the Ducks gained a
sweep of Portland with 5-4 and
7-2 wins, but this time the visiting
Pilots snared four of the six sing
les points and won two of the dou
bles.
‘They are a better team this
season,” praised Oregon coach
Buzz Summers. “They have a
couple of scholarships in their
program and it becomes an ad
vantage for them in getting
players. But many of the matches
today could have gone either way.
They were very dose.”
Wins by Bill Gealder and Steve
Day helped the Pilots, and the two
later came back to rout Oregon's
Tom Greider and Russ Childers
7-6, 6-2 in doubles. The Ducks'

going three sets against Hans
Munch before winning and Wilson
nailing down a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2
triumph. Steve Bolstad and Tom
Goldman teamed for Oregon to
get a doubles win 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
“I was especially pleased with
Russ Childers,” said Summers.
“He came back from losing a
match point at 5-3 in the third set
to win.”

“He injured it when he slipped
on the poor courts,” explained
Summers. “The courts are slick
and they have ledges. Between
them you can get clubbed.”
Seattle University arrives today
for a 2:30 match with the Ducks.
Seattle bears former Sunset High
School standout Jon Kemper, but
other than that their potential is a
mystery.
“I do not know much about
them,” said Summers. "But I know
they have been beaten by
Washington and Portland."
Oregon continues to heal from a
few injuries Tom Greider is com
ing off a bad ankle that last
weekend had him, as Summers
describes, “limping all through a
match.” Summers also took time
to single out the play of Childers,
and said “he has really played fine
tennis lately and several of the
opposing coaches have men
tioned it.”
