    Committee plans Rust recall drive
By ANN TRENEMAN
Of the Emerald
Lane County Commissioner Jerry
Rust may have to face a recall election if
the Committee to Recall Rust procures
the necessary 15,333 signatures from
registered voters in Lane County.
The committee claims Rust has voted
against the best intertests of taxpayers
and presented a seven point list of alle
gations against Rust at a Tuesday press
conference.
Ralph Peterson, a county commis
sioner during the 1950’s and John Dot
sun, an unsuccessful county commis
sioner candidate in 1976, are chairer
and treasurer of the group. Dotsun
claimed that “at least” 600 people from
around the county are working on the
recall drive.
"Naturally we ll get the signatures,”
Dotsun said, “A representative from
every community in the county came to
pick up a petition today.”
If the recall drive is successful Rust,
who is currently chairer of the board, can
choose to resign within five days or face
a recall election within the following 20
days.
“If they do get the signatures,” Hal
Hartzell, a Rust aid said, “Jerry will not
resign." Rust has stated he is willing to
defend his record in public and openly
debate with his opponents.
Hartzell stated the recall drive was
something they’d “been expecting for a
while...it just hit the fan Tuesday.”
The committee charged Rust with in
temperate behavior for drinking while
driving a county car and of being drunk
and rowdy in public. They also stated
Rust failed to publicly announce before
his election his previous conviction of
possession of marijuana, which was
then a felony crime.
The remaining five allegations were:
that Rust has repeatedly voted against
taxpayers best interests and welfare;
that he has acted irresponsibly in per
forming his duties; that he has caused a
breakdown of working relations between
county and municipal governments; that
he’s been unresponsive to the county’s
citizens; and that he has encouraged
excessive spending of the tax money.
Hartzell called some of the points “out
and out falsehoods’’ and that there is “no
real merit” in any of the points.
“This is just crazy,” Dotsun said, refer
ring to Rust’s behavior. “Now he’s trying
to get 1200 new CETA jobs and get fund
ing for all his friends.” Dotsun elaborated
saying the friends were members of
Hoedads, a local tree-planting coopera
tive which Rush used to belong to.
“He’s already got about 200 on the
payroll," Dotsun said. “He’s building a
dynasty.”
