    Back to basics
Supplement to the Oregon Daily Emerald
Friday. February 3, 1978
For the do-it-yourselfer
The early 1960s asked questions. The late 1960s saw
cultural and social change in search of the answers.
Today in the 1970s, the answers have synthesized an
individualized and self reliant lifestyle that has caught on
with more people than just those who started the move
ment.
The dream of living a life molded by your own hands
instead of by those of the all-pervading, all-impersonal
“they” was popularized by the anti-Establishment folk.
Funny how the dream soon caught on in the Establish
ment and is now the topic of chat everywhere, even in the
higher echelons of American society.
Dreams — and realities — of doing something your
self, whether it be heating your home, constructing your
bed or starting your own business, are tracked down in this
Back to Basics supplement. The ideas herein are yours for
the dreaming and scheming of your own lifestyle.
In conjunction with this supplement, the University’s
Survival Center and SEARCH are sponsoring a two-day
symposium next week on “Living Lightly” that will focus
on similar back to basics concepts. The symposium’s
schedule of events is detailed on page 2.
