Kick the habit in the butt
The American Cancer Society's “I Quit Kits” will be available
Sunday through Feb. 11 to smoker who want to break the habit.
The kits will be distributed free of charge at KUGN radio station,
Eugene and Springfield public libraries, the River Road Park District,
the Amazon Village Community Center and the American Cancer Soci
ety, 1892 Willamette St.
The “I Quit Kit” is a complete program, containing a wide range of
information and imaginative aids to help smokers quit. The first phase
gives facts on smoking hazards, benefits of quitting, and tips on how to
cut down. The second phase gives methods to help quitters maintain
the non-smoking habit.
Smokers are encouraged to pick up their own kits. Trained persons
will be on hand to have participants fill out questionnaires, explain each
section of the kit, explain the follow-up procedures andanswer any
questions.
The American Cancer Society picked Lane County as a test
market for the kits. A telephone survey of participants will be conducted
six weeks after distribution to evaluate short-term success. At the end of
five months a mail survey will be conducted to determine long-term
success.
Instrumentalists perform
Harpsichordist Susan Tofte and clavichordist James Morse will
perform at the third Early-Keyboard Festival concert on Saturday at 8
p.m. in Beall Concert Hall.
Tofte will perform works by Louis Couperin, Francois Couperin,
Antoine Forqueray, Girolamo Frescobalbi, Domenico Scarlatti and J.P.
Rameau. Morse will play a composition by Bach.
The concert is free and the public is invited.
BRING recycling Sat.
BRING is sponsoring a recycling pickup Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1
p.m. at the Condon School on the alley between 17th Avenue and 19th
Avenue.
Recyclables accepted include cans, glass, aluminum, cardboard,
paper sacks, used motor oil, egg cartons and returnable cans and
bottles.

Chinese politics, painting
examined by lecturer
A lecture on “Political Aspects of Chinese Painting During the
Mongol Rule (1279-1368)’’ will be given Monday at 8 p.m. in Room 107
Lawrence Hall.
Jerome Sitbergeld, who teaches Chinese art at the University of
Washington, will give the lecture as part of the University Department of
Art History’s Maude I. Kerns lecture series on oriental art.
In the paintings of the Mongol period, also known as the Yuan
dynasty, one finds indications, through style and subject, the protest of
the educated Chinese against the foreign and so-called “barbaric
rulers.
