Ensemble debuts tonight
Phi Beta will present a scholarship concert tonight at 8 at Beall
Concert Hall.
The South Eugene Chamber Ensemble will perform under the
direction of Richard Long. Guest artists are Sylvia Spengler, cellist, and
Victor Steinhardt, pianist and associate professor of music.
Admission is $2. but students and senior citizens will be admitted
for $1. A reception will follow.
The ensemble which is making its debut at the University, is com
prised of 11 student-musicians. They will perform five selections rang
ing from Dvorak’s “Serenade in E Major for Strings” to a blue grass
medley.
History series starts today
The film series ‘‘Civilization,’' with Sir Kenneth Clarke narrating the
rise and development of Western civilization, will begin with Episode 1,
‘ The Frozen World,” depicting the Dark Ages and the fall of the Roman
Empire.
The series will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, beginning today. The
location has been changed to Laurelwood Recreation Building, 2700
Columbia St.
The series is sponsored by the Eugene Parks and Recreation
Department. A $1 admission will be charged.

Project seeks smokers
A University psychologist is seeking about 20 volunteers to partici
pate in a six-week smoking control program, to begin Saturday.
Ed Lichenstein, University psychology professor and supervisor of
the Oregon Smoking Control Project being conducted through the
University Psychology Clinic, says the program is open to any person
who wants to quit smoking.
Cost of the program is $5. A $20 refundable deposit is required.
Persons interested in enrolling in the program can call Lichtenstein
or his assistants between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at
686-4964.
Council adds members
The University Senate voted in favor of a motion to increase the
faculty membership on the Faculty Advisory Council and the Faculty
Personnel Committee to eight each.
The motion, submitted by an ad hoc committee, would take effect
as of this spring’s election.
