Ducks fend off stubborn Aggies
by looking like a team again
By MIKE GRADY
Of the Emerald
Oregon played their kind of
basketball game for the first time
in weeks Saturday night against
the University of Cal-Davis, and
when it was all over the Ducks
stood on the tall end of a 69-58
score to claim their first victory in
their last four outings.
But even with more intensity
than the last couple of weeks, the
Ducks still didn't have an easy
time putting away a pesky Cal
Davis squad. After shooting a
sizzling .607 from the field in the
first half to lead the locker room on
top 45-32, Oregon just couldn't
find a way to bury the Aggies.
"I thought we looked like a team
tonight,'' said Oregon head coach
Dick Harter afterwards. “We did a
lot of good things, all of us made
good tough basketball plays.”
The second half shooting of the
Ducks was the only thing Harter
could find fault with in the evening.
But even then he admitted that the
shots taken were good ones they
just weren’t falling in.

Men split a swimming weekend

Coaching philosophies often
can be misleading.
After a weekend that saw the
Oregon men's swimming team fall
to the University of Washington
84-29 Friday night and then come
back Saturday afternoon to rout
Pacific Lutheran 78-33, men's
coach Dick Schleicher was not
dwelling over the results.
He is spending more time look
ing to what stands ahead.
We were, what I call, swim
ming through the two meets We
swam different lineups and were
more concerned with getting
feedback from actual races, then
practicing them and prepare for
the (Nor-Pac) championships. We
did not point toward anyone this
weekend."
The Husky men's squad swept
to first place finishes in ten of the
twelve events, with Oregon get
ting top honors in both diving
events, thanks to Jim Voll.
Schleicher pinpointed one Husky
advantage over the Ducks.
“They have the money to re
cruit much better. They can draw
from the larger population in Seat
tle for recruiting. They have al
ways had a good reputation for
swimming.”
Washington was anchored by a
pair of double-winners. Steve
Dougherty captured the men's
1,000-meter freestyle and the 200
individual medley. Bill Patterson
took the 200 backstroke and 50

Despite no first place finishes in
races. Oregon managed second
and third place finishes each from
Steve Hamilton and Jay Evans.
Jerry Andrus, who had two third
place finishes in the 1,000 and
500 freestyles, sat out the Pacific
Lutheran meet due to an aggravat
ing shoulder injury. Andrus's time
in the 1.000 freestyle against
Washington of 10:02.69 turned
out to be a Duck freshmen record.
"The meet was experimental,
and I think we will benefit from
it in the championships,” said
Schleicher of the Washington
meet. The Ducks rebounded
against Pacific Lutheran by
sweeping ten of the fourteen
first-place finishes.

After John Murray powered in
two of his game-high 22 points off
of a lay-in from the baseline with
2:38 remaining, the Aggies man
aged to hold the Ducks scoreless
for two minutes and draw within
six points. Most of the damage to
Oregon at this time came from
Cal-Davis’ high scoring guard Au

By hitting two high-arching jum

gave the people sitting in the third

With a steal by Cal-Davis' Cor

and the subsequent lay-in, the
Aggies were suddenly nearer than
they had been since eight minutes
left in the first half. But with the
clock in their favor Oregon used
the ball handling of Mike Drum
mond and the free throw shooting
of Felton Sealey and Murray to ice
their 12th win of the season.
Harter was quick to point out
that the game had been a team
effort and that everyone had
played his part. By starting Mike
Drummond and four freshmen —
Phil Barner, Felton Sealey, Mike
Clark and Rich Davis — Harter
said that he was playing the guys

Two players who drew special
praise from Harter were Murray
and Danny Mack. Murray not only
hit for six of 10 from the field and
10 of 12 from the line to total his 22
points, but did other things be
sides.
John played a super game,"
Harter said. He shot well and did
