After split with Washington teams
women cagers journey to OCE

The women's basketball team,
coming off a 1-1 split in Washing
ton last weekend, meets Oregon
College of Education (OCE) in
Monmouth tonight.
The Ducks did not play well
against Washington on Friday los
ing 51-43, but rebounded against
Western Washington State to win
Saturday 76-67.
“Washington was our all-time
low,” said coach Elwin Heiny. "We
couldn’t buy a basket. Maybe be
cause it was Friday the thir
teenth....
“The (Washington) game was
very physical, the officiating
equally poor and the team’s
shooting was extremely cold,” he
said.
Tara Smith was the lone bright
spot for the Ducks, scoring 14
points. “She played well against
Washington,” said Heiny. “She
was the only one with a good
game.”
Heiny said Debbie Adams and
Kerry Clawson had off nights. He
said Adams selected her shots
poorly, but noted she can shoot
better. Heiny said he’s looking to
Adams and Clawson to provide
more points than they! iave been.
Julie Cushing caught fire
against Western Washington,
scoring a team record 31 points
and shooting 14 of 18 from the
field to lead the Ducks.
“We could have won against
Washington,” Heiny said, “but we
played below par. Both teams are
considered good and we showed
what we can do (against Western
Washington.)”
Oregon College of Education,
with a record of 1-4 on the year, is
led by junior forwards Renee
Lambrecht and Cindy Musgrave,
the only returning starters from
last year’s squad.

Ducks try to regroup from Indiana,
take on mystery team from SOSC

With the Indiana meet behind
him, Duck swimming coach Dick
Schleicher now looks ahead to
what may be this season’s mys
tery guest, Southern Oregon
State College (SOSC), whom
Oregon hosts tonight at 6:30 in
Leighton Pool.
“I really do not know what they
have,” admitted Schleicher from
his office last week. It has been a
year since the Ducks last squared
off against SOSC and Schleicher
expects to see some definite
changes. He was given only a
sneak preview during December’s
All-around championships at
Leighton pool and expects to see
some added competition.
“I think they have some good
freshmen who could not make it to
the All-around championships
meet, so they will probably be
much better than they were last
year,” he said.

Oregon State meet, Schleicher
picked out a few of the opposing
bright spots. Heading the list is
Jim Rodey, who fares well in the
500 and 200 intermediate medley .
“He seems to be one of their
better swimmers,” he added.
Other swimmers to keep an eye
on are Barry Chapman, John Rot
tercutter, Joel Engel and butter
flyer Dan Dolan, who Schleicher
also sees as worrisome.
At last year's meet, Oregon
walked away with a convincing
win of 76-28. Schleicher, so far
this season, has been pleased
with Jay Evans and Jon Seton,
claiming they both “look very
good.” The breaststrokers have
also excelled, mainly Mike Dole
and Ron Wigham,
game, is also ranked 10th in the
javelin nationally.
“Cindy and Renee have been
scoring well," said OCE coach
Lynn Campbell. Although, said
Campbell, neither have been play
ing up to their capabilities
“We have more hurts than
wells,” Campbell said. Two of her
guards are out, one because of an
ankle sprain and the other be
cause of infected toes.
Campbell said her team has
been rather inconsistent this year.
Last weekend OCE lost to both
Washington State and Boise
State on the road.
“We were outclassed in height
against Boise State," Campbell
said. “But we only had 11 fqyls in
the game. If we can do that
against Oregon and still hold our
defense, we’ll do well.”
Campbell said if her team can
keep the Ducks from running, they
could have a chance to win.
“I’d like to keep Oregon slowed
down. They like to run the (fast)
break and they’re good off the
boards. We will have to shut them
down on the offensive boards,”
she added.
Oregon is also taller than OCE,
but Campbell feels a strong de
fensive effort will neutralize the
Ducks height advantage.
Heiny said the Ducks have de
veloped dose to the point he ex
pected them to be for this point in
the season.
“If we perform up to our poten
tial, we will have the better team. I
feel the Washington schools un
derrated us. I hope we don’t un
derestimate OCE.”

19.1 average, followed by Becky

Western Washington last Saturday, will lead the Ducks into action
tonight against Oregon College of Education in Monmouth.

Rugby practice to begin
Oregon s rugby dub will start practice this Thursday for their
winter term schedule. Practice will begin at 3:30 on the intramural
field behind the covered tennis courts.
The team has a new coach, Ken Dovey, and new members are
encouraged to come out.
Ski team soars in Washington
The Oregon Ski team set a hopeful tempo for the rest of the
season as the men’s team placed first with the women taking
second in the Northwest Conference action at Crystal Mountain,
Washington.
Ten teams from around the West Coast competed in the
three-day meet. The meet was scored two ways, both by the
NCAA (who induded Nevada-Reno and Montana) and by the
Northwest Ski Conference, who did not indude those teams.
Evelyn Duffy of Oregon placed second in the giant slalom and
fifth in the slalom. Aven Switzer, also of Oregon, finished second
in cross-country skiing to lead the team in that event.
