Number of sexual offenses same as ’76
By MADELEINE MATTHEW
Of the Emerald
The frequency of rape and sexual abuse
in the Eugene area last year remained the
same as previous years, but could go down
in 1978, according to Marcia Morgan of the
Lane Interagency Rape Team.
She says some “multiple offenders,”
rapists responsible for more than one re
ported sex crime, have been caught and
sent to prison. Therefore, the number of
sexual assaults could decline this year.
However, she warns the potential for
rape may be greater because more women
are “getting out,” working and going to
school.
She also says more people are starting to
report rapes and sexual abuses, causing
the figures to increase. So far this year the
rape team has investigated several reports
of rape and has received many calls report
ing "suspicious characters.”
According to Morgan, from January
through November of 1977, 26 rapes and
14 attempted rapes occurred in the Eugene
area. Twenty-one accounts of sodomy, 35
of sexual abuse and 125 of public indecen
cies were also reported. The figures for De
cember have not yet been tallied.
Of the reported rapes and attempted
rapes, eight took place within a five-block
radius of the University. Morgan says only
one occurred directly on campus. Four re
ports of sodomy, two of sexual abuse and
37 of public indecency also were reported
during the 11 months, with the majority oc
curring west of campus.
Morgan explains many sex offenders op
erate west of campus because of the high
concentration of students living in apart
ments and frequenting taverns. She adds
many indecent exposure cases are re
ported near parks, around children and
even in cars and on bicycles.
Although 1977 figures are not yet com
pleted, Morgan expects the months that
yielded the greatest number of rapes will
probably be the same as past years. Statis
tics for 1975 and 1976 show that frequency
of rape, sodomy and sexual abuse were
highest during May, August and Sep
tember.

See, the news is out: Donna is
sterile. Oh, she doesn’t want to
believe it, but there can be no
doubt. Dr. Clater did a test that
proved it. And the signs of pre
gnancy? Donna’s probably suffer
ing from a hysterical pregnancy.
With her, it’s so hysterical it’s be
come a fixation. She only learned
the truth Thursday, so it’s hard to
say how she’ll react to it. She’s not
very logical (and it’s hard to buy
the fact that she just turned 18.
Who are they trying to kid?), and
given her past history, in a month
Chuck will probably be married to
a loon.
But Donna’s sterility isn’t the
only thing to move into the spot
light. The Martins’ ill-fated efforts
to adopt Tad are occupying center
stage again. And boy, Ol’ Ray be
comes less likable everytime we
see him. He and Billy Clyde could
have a sleaze out and I’m not sure
who’d win.
Anyway, Ruth and Ray had set
a deal. She had agreed to cash in
her life insurance policy and give
him the 10 thousand clams he
wanted. But now it seems 10

thousand isn’t good enough for
him, he wants 15. But Ray didn’t
stop with that request. He followed
it up by hassling Tad some more.
It all began when Nick sent Ray
(Nick thinks Ray’s last name is
Green) to deliver a case of wine to
Phil and Tara. While Ray was
there, he overheard Tara saying
Tad and little Phil would be alone
since Joe and Ruth had to go to a
PTA meeting. How convenient for
Ray. A couple of defenseless kids
is about his speed.
01’ Ray ended up scaring them
pretty well, but they’ve got no
money so Ray split back to Ns job
at The Chateau. He didn’t get the
welcome he’d expected.
After Ray left, little Phil called
his dad, Uncle Phil (who was
throwing a party at the time), and
told him what had happened. Little
Phil recognized Ray as the guy
who’d delivered the wine. After
talking to Phil, Nick sent Ray walk
ing when he got back. A lot of peo

“But what about Danny?”, you
collectively cry.
Actually, Danny probably
doesn’t matter to most of you, but
he matters to the script writers, at
least they’re using him to fill up
time. Anyway, he seems to be
reaching an understanding with
Devon.
And, Estelle isn’t that important
to the story, but over the vacation
she had a little action which may
make a difference some day. She
spent most of Christmas in a local
church. (Asking for, among other
things, a blessing for Billy Clyde.
Jeez, he’s probably try to sell it for
a little dough anyhow.) There, she
met Maggie, an elderly lady with
no family to spend Xmas with.
It took a while, but Estelle ended
up visiting Maggie at her home.
The visits have done Estelle a
world of good, but they’ve made
Billy Clyde a little upset. So upset,
that the other day he reminded Es
telle who was boss by slapping
her around pretty good. She told
Billy she was going out to visit a
“john,” but when she couldn’t pro
duce any bread, he knew she was

It isn’t exactly clear what, if any
thing, Maggie’s presence is going
to mean to Estelle. So far, it’s got
ten her beaten, but maybe she’ll
turn out to be a female Howard
Hughes, buy the farm and leave
her millions of bucks to Estelle.
Anything can happen on this
show.
