Sacred Heart library
closes doors to students
University students can no longer use the Sacred Heart General
Hospital Library under the terms of a University Library and Sacred
Heart policy statement, according to H. William Axford, library dean.
The policy is not new, but the increased use of the hospital’s library
by University biology and life-science students necessitated the an
nouncement of another policy statement. In 1973 approximately 600
students used the library and in 1977 almost 1,500 students used the
library, the dean notes.
Students are encouraged to go to the Education-Psychology sec
tion of the University Library and the Science Library instead of Sacred
Heart. The Science Library as well as Sacred Heart, has available
“Medline," a medical data computer search service.
“The Sacred Heart Library is a private library and has no responsi
bility to serve University students," Axford says. “Our needs are pro
vided by the state and legislative decisions.”
However, if students exhaust all other resources, Sawed Heart’s
library may be used by students who have received a written request
from a University librarian, says Axford.
