Freshman Barner leads Ducks
in scoring after twelve games
Freshman Phil Barner has
moved into the Oregon team scor
ing leadership after twelve games.
The 6-foot-7 first-year player out
of Oakland poured in 17 points
against Vermont in Oregon’s last
outing to boost his average to 10.5
points per game.
Bamer’s top outing of the sea
son was against Georgia Tech in
the Dayton Classic when he
scored 18 points. Barrier has yet
to start a game but has logged 221
minutes of playing time (18 mi
nutes per game.)
Oregon’s only other scorer hit
ting in double figures is center Dan
Hartshorne. The sophomore
postman is scoring at an even
10 .0 points per game with his best
performance coming against
Cal-State Fullerton when he
poured in 21 points.
Hartshorne is also Oregon’s
third-leading rebounder, garner
ing 5.9 rebounds a game. Kelvin
Small is the Ducks’ top rebounder,
hauling in 7.0 a game.
Coming on strong for the Ducks
is freshman forward Mike Clark.
Clark, who had the best scoring
day of any Duck this season with
his 24 point outing against Rice in
the Far West Classic, is averaging
9.2 points per game and 5.9 re
bounds.
Another hot Duck has been
guard Rob Closs who has upped
his scoring average to 7.3, and
has been especially hot at the foul
line. Closs has hit on 18 consecu
tive free throws and has con
nected on 24 of 26 (.923) for the
season.
Hollins running second
Walton, Lucas lead balloting
PORTLAND (AP) — The Na
tional Basketball Association’s top
team and defending champion is
well on its way to getting three
players on the NBA’s Western Di
vision all-star team.
The Portland Trail Blazers
might have landed four men on
the squad if they weren’t limited by
league rules to three.
Although vote-counting con
tinues, forward Maurice Lucas
and center Bill Walton are way
ahead in balloting for their posi

Fencing club meets
There will be a fencing dub meeting in the EMU tonight at 5
p.m. The room number will be announced.
The meeting will deal with practice time, possible dub letters,
and fund raising. All interested faculty, staff and students are
urged to attend.

try. The deadline for votes was
Dec. 31, but NBA officials said a
final count is not expected for
about two weeks. Partial results
were released Tuesday.
The all-star game will be played
in Atlanta Feb. 5.
Lucas was the league’s top
vote-getter with 235,159 votes.
Walton had 227,609 votes to lead
Los Angeles’ Kareem Abdul
Jabbar by more than 100,000 bal
lots.
Gymnasts face Wolves
The Oregon women’s gymnastics team wiH compete in a scored
meet for the first time this season when it travels to Monmouth to face
the Oregon College of Education Saturday.
Oregon's only other competition so far this season was the Pacific
Invitational where junior Wendy Halberg placed second in the all
around and senior Lorene Gamble took top honors in the uneven bars.
No team scores were kept in the meet.
“I’m not sure what gymnasts OCE has this year, but this will be our
first chance to see how our team is balanced and to get a fresh start on
our schedule after the holiday break from competition," said Oregon
Coach Henriette Heiny.
