House'’ may be a comedy, but not
everyone is laughing. Especially
the Cottage Grove downtown
merchants.
Filming of the Animal House
homecoming parade on the main
streets of Cottage Grove has left
many downtown merchants with
out parking near their stores and
blocked street access to custom
ers.
Complaints from several down
town merchants have prompted
Universal Studios to pay $10,000
to those businesses affected by
the confusion of the past two
weeks as the filming progressed.
Many of the merchants com
plained of the blocked streets, the
crowded doorways by curious on
lookers and little or no parking for
downtown shoppers. The com
plaints were relayed to Peter
Macgregor-Scott, Universal
Studio's unit production manager
for the movie, who compensated
the store owners with a $10,000
check for their trouble.
The check, which was provided
by the Universal Studio execu
tives, was given to the merchants
Saturday. According to Lloyd

filming hurt their business. Film crews invaded the small town last
week but will return to the University today.

Several of the store owners re
ported an increase in both non
buying customer traffic and shop
lifting. Others, particularly re
staurants and fast food estab
lishments, noted an increase in
business. Stores outside of the
downtown area also reported
shopping increases.

opening of the movie's climatic
scenes in the destruction of the
homecoming parade. For several
dear-weather days, the Animal
House cast and crew filmed the
chaotic bedlam as parade float
after parade float was systemati
cally destroyed by the Animal
House fraternity members.
The movie filming will return
to the University campus today
with several scenes to be filmed in
Johnson Hall and the EMU fish
bowl.
