Demonstration organized
opposing KSU’s gym site
By JANE LEHMAN

More than 3,000 demonstrators will gather at the
gymnasium construction site at Kent State University
Saturday, according to the May 4th Coalition, a Kent,
Ohio based organization.
The demonstration is expected to be larger than
the Sept. 24 protest that made national headlines
earlier this year, coalition member Chic Canora said.
During the Sept, confrontation, demonstrators
broke down construction fences and occupied the
gymnasium site. The gym is being built on the
grounds where four Kent State students were killed
in 1970 while protesting the Vietnam war.
The Coalition is holding the demonstration in
order "to show the broad base of support," opposing
the construction says Canfora. "We didn't have all
the student support then during the Sept. 24 rally,
she said in anticipation of greater num
bers of protesters.
During the last few weeks, the Kent State ad
ministration has directed the contractor to erect a
10-foot fence embedded in concrete in anticipation of
further trouble, said Joe Durbin, managing editor of
the Kent State news service.
Canfora was confident the fence would not turn
back demonstrators intent on making their views
known. "A fence is not going to stop them,” she
predicted. “The people will not let their cries be ig
nored.”
A recurring theme throughout the confrontation
has been “what goes up must come down,” Canfora
added.
The May 4th Coalition was originally organized
to commemorate the shootings through sucn ac
tivities as closing down classes on campus for the
day. Since the gymnasium construction issue began,
they have led protests against the designated site.
The May 4th Coalition is skeptical of the need to
build the gymnasium on Blanket or Freedom Hill, site
of the shootings.
"The University claimed financial reasons why
they don’t change the site,” said Canfora, who has
been arrested five times during the course of protest
activities. "But they've spent more money defending
the structure, prosecuting people, hiring guards and
putting up that $30,000 fence.”
The May 4th Coalition supporters believe the
administration is deliberately trying to “bury a piece
of American history it would rather forget, said Can
fora.
According to research done by the Coalition,
Kent State originally made plans for a different gym
nasium site and bought a 17-acre tract in 1968 for
that purpose.

Some states called community

allow a husband to control his

some state and federal laws that
say women do not have the same
rights and obligations for jury duty
that men have.
Engelmann said such laws
would be changed or repealed
under the ERA She and the other
two panel members contended,
though, that Oregon would be af
fected very little by passage of the
ERA because it has already
enacted most laws that provide
women's rights.
The effect of a military draft on
women was also discussed by the
panel members. Paulus said if a
draft were enacted, there would
be nothing to prevent Congress
from drafting women as well as
men under the ERA. Engelmann
said women would have to pass
the same tests as men in order to
go to the front battle lines in a war.
Both women said they felt such
actions would be fair, however.

Martin said during his campaign
he will emphasize five issues that
need to be solved in Oregon in the

• Housing costs and availabil

• Quality of education in

• Strengthening the economy

conditions for small business in
Oregon."
• A "strong stance against

• A new long-range energy
approach -- Martin said he favors
solar energy as a viable alterna

pellets as another possible
source. He said he supports Ballot
Measure 2 which would promote
use of non-nuclear energy
sources.
Martin said he hopes to raise
$200,000 by primary time through
people who "don't normally contri

He said he would “rather wel

Ford’s aide linked in probe
WASHINGTON — A former South Korean intelligence agent
testified today that he was told in 1975 that Korean rice dealer
Tongsun Park had links with a high official of Congress and “an
assistant to the President.”
The president referred to was later identified as Gerald Ford
but the names of the assistant and the official of Congress were
not disclosed.
There was no indication the witness was referring to Tong
sun Park’s links with Betty Ford’s personal assistant, Nancy
Howe.
Howe, her husband, James, and their daughter were guests
of Park in the Dominican Republic in 1975. Howe later committed
suicide after White House officials began an inquiry into the trip.
KKK Meeting disrupted
SACRAMENTO — Demonstrators chanting “Death to the
Klan” ripped a door off its hinges today as they attempted to break
up an airport news conference held by the Knights of the Ku Klux
Klan (KKK).
There were no arrests and about 50 demonstrators, mainly
college students, were dispersed without any violence, said
sheriffs spokesman Bill Miller.
David Duke, a spokesman for the KKK from Metairie, La.,
said he was in the California capitol to try to meet with the highest
state official who would see him.
