Litter
Tough law
faces those
caught in act
Thirty days in jail for dropping
your candy wrapper? It could
happen right here in Lane County.
According to a new anti-litter
ordinance recently passed by the
Lane County commissioners,
throwing any type of garbage or
other refuse on land or water,
whether public or private, is a crim
inal offense. Previously, no anti
litter law existed in the county.
Linder the new law, the
minimum punishment for anyone
convicted of littering will be con
finement at labor cleanng debris
from county lands and waters for
not less than one day The max
imum will be both a $500 fine and
30 days in jail in addition to clear
ing litter

The ordinance, which takes ef
fect in two weeks, is not designed
merely to punish offenders, but it
also rewards anyone who sup
plies information leading to the ar
rest and conviction of litterers. The
reward may be up to half of the
fine collected.
The bill is originally the idea of
Ed Grimes, a farmer from Harris
burg. Grimes, along with students
who have been picking up litter
around the county, lobbied to get
the bill through the legislature and
into law
