Feldman outlines four areas of ASUO attack By WALLY BENSON Of the Emerald Heading into the busiest time of the year for his young administration, ASUO Pres. Gary Feldman has four main areas he and his staff will be concerned with. One area deals with major projects, such as the possibility of a student-run tavern in the EMU and increased student participa tion in the running of the EMU. But Feldman’s “pet project” is trying to arrange debates between the candidates for the var ious races scheduled in the spring, includ ing Gov. Bob Straub’s bid for re-election, Rep. Jim Weaver’s attempt to keep his Fourth Congressional District seat, and Mark Hatfield’s try to remain a Senator from Oregon. “There are lots of big names up for elec tion in the spring,” says Feldman. “We re going to try to get them in a debate-open forum situation. This would be a great chance for students to see who they can vote for, and also for the candidates to ad dress the student voters. It will also help solidify the legitimacy of the student as a voter.” Another area of concentration for Feld man and Co. is in the legislative sphere. Even though the Oregon Legislature is in an off-year, Feldman will still be active with the interim committees. One issue he will bring up is whether married student housing is discriminatory. “Housing should be offered to students on the basis of need, not marital status,” he says. “We will try to get some legislation that will make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of marital status.” He will also support the 19-year-old drink ing law, particularly because it would make the feasibility of an EMU tavern much brigh ter, and it could serve a much larger portion of the student body. “We don’t agree with alcohol abuse," says Feldman, “but we do believe in the right of individuals who can vote and have other privileges in society to be able to have the choice of having alcohol available to them." Feldman, after serving on the Oregon Student Lobby (OSL) since he became president, says the $15,000 investment made by the University may not be worth it. “After sitting on the board, I’m not sure we re getting our money s worth,” he says. "Nobody else in the state system is paying close to that much* I’ll look into it further and if I still feel the OSL is not worth it, I will recommend to the Incidental Fee Commit tee that we cease funding it and pull out of the OSL." A third area is what Feldman calls cam pus issues, which includes ASUO Execu tive cooperation with the Incidental Fee Gary Feldman Committee and the Student University Af fairs Board. It also covers working on the possibility of establishing a Mac Court Board to enable students to have some input into how hat building is run. One issue sure to be discussed is the policy of the Athletic Department making the student athletic passes a combination of basketball and football tickets. Feldman says that between the inciden tal fee given to the AD and the money re ceived by the AD for the athletic passes, students are paying a total of $250,000. “Students deserve a lot more for their money,” he says. "They deserve a fair break. Right now, they are getting the shaft. They should get to go to a basketball game without being forced to buy a football ticket, too." The final area is “general outreach," which Feldman says is to help make the ASUO better known. He will do this by going to the dorms, publicizing the various ASUO programs and, basically, "getting students aware of what’s going on.” Feldman says his office always needs student help on its projects, and interested people or people who just want to know what the ASUO is about should drop by the offices in Suite 4 of the EMU. Gary Feldman are his two vice presidents, Molly Devlin and Keli Osborn. Devlin, VP for Internal Affairs and Programs, is a senior major ing in economics and finance. Feldman describes her as being a person with “boundless vitality" “Molly will deal with some specific issues as well as oversee her sector of the administration,’’ said Feldman. "In addition, she would be acting president in my absence.” ' Devlin has had no previous in volvement in student government on this campus, but Feldman said he asked her to apply, saying he knew her personally and felt she could do the job. “I wanted someone who would be capable of handling the variety of interests involved with the job,' Feldman said when he an nounced his selection of Devlin in the spring. “I felt Molly was well qualified from my personal con tact with her.” Joining Devlin is Osborn, the VP for University and State Af fairs. Osborn is a junior majoring in journalism, and worked last year as a research assistant for ASUO state affairs. She also managed the ASUO's Legislative Resource Center. “I’m interested in what's going on in the University,'' Osborn said after her selection. “I’ve learned a lot this year about issues concern ing students. I’d like to continue advocating the student’s posi tion." Although the state Legislature won’t be in session next year, Os born says there is still much to be done in the area of state affairs. “Well work with the Legislature's interim committees and the State Board of Higher Education,' she said. “Plus we ll be working on issues that will come before the next session of the Legislature.” In the area of University affairs, Osborn said she will attempt to get student input on thfe effects of budget cuts being made by the University administration. She \ said she would also try to gener ate more ASUO support for vari ous student groups on campus. “To an extent, there wasn't much emphasis on University af fairs this year," she said. “In fact, there was a big gap in that area. We hope to establish better com munication with the adminis tration. We want to work in a spirit of cooperation with them.'' As for their summer perfor mances, Feldman says both his vice-presidents, and his staff in general, are "real hot. I'm real pleased and thrilled by their per formances during the summer " Molly Devlin V ' ■ .../ Keli Osborn Adding to Feldman's staff are two administrative assistants under each of his vice-presidents. Lisa Bamhardt and Michael Con nelly work under Devlin, and Karen Aydt and John Barlow work under Osborn. Lori Peterson is the ASUO Press Officer. Terry Vaughn is involved with Student Administrative Board duties. And Kathy Pheiffer is the coordinator of the ASUO Course Guide.
