Money (Continued from page 5) parents or guardian for more than two consecutive weeks during 1976, 1977, 1978 or 1979; and if you were or will be listed as an exemption on your parents' or guardian’s income tax return for 1976, 1977, 1978 or 1979. You must also file the SER, a financial aid transcript from any other postsecondary school you have attended, verification that you have been admitted to the University (this is give to the finan cial aid office by the admissions office) and other documentation, such as verification of welfare or veterans benefits, if the office should request it. If you get all this done by April 1, you will be given priority consider ation for available funds and will receive notification in early May. If you goof and get your application in late, you will still be evaluated for financial aid eligibility, but awards will only be made if funds are still available. The criteria used for evaluating your eligibility, once you've ap plied, are many. The amount of aid you can receive is the differ ence between the cost of educa tion at the University and the ex pected family contribution. The Office of Student Financial Aid expects you, and your parents if you are dependent or a spouse if you are married to a person not attending school, to bear the primary responsibility for meeting educational costs. Financial aid is available to fill the gap between potential resources and yearly educational expenses. The financial aid office further expects you to contribute a minimum of $200 per term toward your education. If you are married and your spouse is not a student, an additional minimum of $200 per month is expected. One comforting thing about the whole process is once your finan cial aid eligibility has been estab lished, the financial aid office will advise you of other sources of aid if the one you applied for is unav ailable. Once you get your aid, you have to follow certain guidelines to keep it. For one, you have to satisfactor ily complete a minimum of 12 cre dit hours per term (if you're a grad student, you only need to com plete 9 hours). And the Financial Aid Office audits your grades at the end of each term and will write you a little note if they discover you are deficient. If you earn less than one-half the required hours in any one term, you must see a counselor before your financial aid will be released. A student who has not satisfactorily completed enough hours in an academic year may be subject to denial of subsequent fi nancial aid. Well, there you have it. The above narrative is by no means a complete listing of all the informa tion you need to know to get finan cial aid, but it should give you a good start. Your next step should be to, yep, you guessed it, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid, 270 Oregon Hall, extension 3221. Classic looks! Traditional for Fall, Shetland wool sweaters.
