it’s the hub of campus activity

For some students, the Erb Memorial
Union (EMU) is just a place to grab a cup of
coffee between classes, but providing food,
recreational and special services, it is
much, much more.
The EMU fishbowl, partially surrounded
by glass, is probably the busiest spot on
campus. Here, students swarm around ta
bles and booths and can discuss the day ’s
events, read Emeralds and text books, play
chess or backgammon or just watch the
people go by as the juke box booms the
latest tunes. During the evening, students
can sit back and enjoy local musicians and
vocalists at the Fishbowl Follies.
The fishbowl menu ranges from coffee,
fruit and doughnuts for those students wast
ing time between classes, to the salads,
sandwiches and fruits of the delicatessen
for serious lunchers.
Hungrier souls may find the cafeteria on
the main floor or the Skylight in the east
lobby more to their liking. The Skylight of
fers salads, soups and vegetarian sand
wiches at fairly low prices. For the hot days,
Baskin and Robbins is located in the out
side breezeway and features the latest in
ice cream cuisine.
The EMU food service isn’t confined to
home, however. It also offers extensive
catering service for events such as wedding
receptions, keggers, banquets, luncheons,
picnics and birthdays.
The EMU Main Desk, located in the east
lobby, is a urug store, information booth,
semi-bank and ticket booth all rolled into
one. The desk sells sundry items such as
tobacco, candy, paperbacks, film and film
processing services. Students with the
proper ID may cash checks up to $5 during
the day and $10 evenings and weekends,
and tickets to campus-sponsored concerts
and even the Greyhound bus also are
available there. In addition, campus maps,
directories and other pieces of information
are available.
Going camping, skiing or hiking? The
Outdoor Resource Center sells and rents a
variety of equipment and supplies from
tents and sleeping bags to ski poles and
boots. The center is located at the northeast
end of the building in the basement.
Pool sharks and pinball wizards will ap
preciate the recreational center in the
basement of the EMU. The 16 pool tables,
16 bowling lanes, 2 ping-pong tables,
regulation-sized shuffleboard and machine
games are all available for students and
faculty with University I.D.
Campus and intercollegiate tournaments
in bowling, billiards, bridge, chess and
ping-pong are conducted each year. For
more information about these tournaments
call 686-3711.
Right next to the recreation area is the
union's print shop. The shop offers copying,
binding, collating and sign-making services
to students and faculty at reasonable
prices.
Beneath the hanging sculpture called
“Voyage to a New Land,” in the east base
ment, lay the Craft Center, Child Care
Center, housing office, ride and housing
boards, student governance offices and the
forum room where mini-concerts and guest
lectures are sometimes held.
The Craft Center is open to any student
for a small use fee. Classes in craft skills
range from making jewelry and stained
glass to photography and bike repair.
The ride and housing bulletin boards are
valuable ways for students to communicate
services needed and offered.
For those who would like to find a quiet
place to browse over the books, the car
peted lounge just off the fishbowl is usually
peaceful enough. The international lounge,
on the floor above, is another quiet spot and
has a music listening room next door.
Tucked away past the bowling alley in the
basement are a series of offices of student
run organizations. The Black Student
Union, Native American Student Union,
footnotes and a legal advice office are
among the offices.
The United States Post Office has a Uni
versity branch located at the north side of
the EMU where students can send or pick
up letters and packages or buy stamps.
A Lot-and-Found office is located be
tween the recreational area and the print
shop in the basement. If the items are not
claimed during a certian period they go on
sale at low prices.
The EMU Ballroom, located on the sec
ond floor of the west section, is the site of
dances, guest speakers and other events.
Just about anything the students needs
or wants to know is at his fingertips in the
EMU. It’s not just a coffee shop.

A familiar sight to many students is the hanging sculpture entitled "Voyage to a New
Land," dangling within the new section of the EMU. The sculpture overlooks the easf
